Today is National Pizza Day!

09/02/2022 Pairings , Special moments

Pizza is, along with the burger, the most popular dish in the world.

People say that traditional pizza, closest to what we eat today, originated in Naples and was first made in the 17th century. As time went by, the way it is made has changed and it became popular all over the world thanks to the Italians who settled in America during the 20th century.

Pizza is here to stay. It is already a legacy of world gastronomy, one of the most versatile dishes and one that has become more popular and more timeless.

Wine and pizza are a perfect pair, so today we are going to give you a few suggestions for pairing your favourite pizza and celebrating its day in style.

One of the pairings that always works best is matching regions, so Italian wines are the perfect partners for good pizza. If you prefer reds, choose one with a moderate alcohol content, mild tannins and fresh acidity, for example a Chianti, or wines made from varieties like Sangiovese or Dolcetto. Red wines from other origins made with Merlot, Syrah, Zinfandel, Garnacha or a young Tempranillo also work very well.

If you are more of a white wine lover, try a white wine with pizzas that don’t have tomato sauce or that have extra cheese, with vegetables or seafood. Regional pairing? How about with Italian Pinot Grigio wines? You could also choose an aged white wine.

If you're one of those people who prefer to eat pizza with a beer, why not switch bubbles? We recommend you try it with a fresh prosecco, or a sparkling Franciacorta, especially if the pizza contains fatty ingredients.

And how about a Lambrusco?

If you’ve got a frightened look on your face, it means you haven’t tasted a real one, which is a world away from those sweet Lambruscos that we all tried in our youth. A dry Lambrusco, with an intense and beautiful colour and, most importantly, of excellent quality, is a perfect companion for your pizzas, pastas and lasagnas, especially if they include tomato and meat.

In short, a good wine or sparkling wine to enjoy with your favourite pizza is instant bliss.
