More about Ramón Bilbao

Ramón Bilbao is one of the wineries belonging to Grupo Zamora. The history of Grupo Zamora is entirely linked to that of Licor 43, created at the beginning of the century in Cartagena, based on a thousand-year-old formula and tradition of liqueurs. In 1945, the three brothers Diego Zamora, Ángel and Josefina, with her husband Emilio Restoy, came together to create a company. Their aim was to make and market Licor 43, initially at a national level and then, all around the world. From the 70s onwards, they started a diversification process with the launch of gins and fruit juices at an internationally level, starting the commercialisation in Europe and America. However, it was in 1999 when they decided to enter the world of wine, first with the purchase of the winery Ramón Bilbao in Rioja, and in subsequent years, the purchase of Mar de Frades. They also created the winery Cruz de Alba in Ribera de Duero. In 2010, they concluded the purchase of Pacharán Zoco, absolute market leader, and Bodegas Palacio de la Vega in Navarra. They also created the brand Monte Blanco in Rueda.

Currently, Grupo Zamora continues to be a entirely family-run company, which is already in its third generation. This group has great diversification in the world of liqueurs and wines, with presence in over 60 markets, and a brand portfolio with great growth potential.

History of the winery Ramón Bilbao

The journey of this emblematic winery of La Rioja started at the end of the 19th century, specifically in 1924. It was then when Ramón Bilbao Murga founded its winery in the rich and prosperous wine town of Haro, in the heart of Rioja Alta. First of all it was an advanced harvester in the area, like many other wineries, making young wines and ageing part of them. They became one of the pioneers in the art of ageing. During its first years, the winery had a 19-hectare vineyard distributed between the municipalities of Labastida, Briones, Ábalos, Treviana and Villalba. They were planted in vase-shape in 1940, and the vineyards only have 2,950 vines per hectare and yields of 4,600 kilos.

Later on, in 1972, Ramón Bilbao’s company became a public limited company (sociedad anónima). However, its philosophy continued the work of its founder, intensifying and perfecting the ageing of its wines without losing its family-like personality. Then, they would have several extensions, and the winery grew with the fame and demand of their wines. In 1999, the shareholding of the company changed with the purchase of a family group of Cartagena, Diego Zamora, S.A. However, the clear intention of the new owner was to continue with the production of quality wines, always respecting the most pure Rioja tradition. For this matter, he appointed Rodolfo Bastida, from Loriñón, as the technical director and manager.

Work philosophy

Today, Bodegas Ramón Bilbao has 50 hectares of its own vineyards between recently planted vineyards (13 hectares in Briones and 2 in Haro) and vineyards in production that are over 30 years old, located in the nearby villages of Ábalos, San Vicente de Sonsierra, Cihuri, Anguciana and Cuzcurrita del Río Tirón. These vines are trained in different ways (vase-shape or espalier), planted on different soils (gravelly, sandy, calcareous), and with different exposures, inclination, etc. All of this aimed to enrich in a remarkable way the diversity and the complexity of its current wines. However, for many years Ramón Bilbao also has grape supply contracts with viticulturers of the area. He advises on these vineyards and personally controls all the cultivation, production and harvesting processes.

On the other hand, the winery has the most modern technology to make its wines. Recently, the winery even added several concrete deposits and clay amphorae made to measure for the production of their most cosmopolitan wines. The winery’s barrel warehouse houses around 7,500 units, made of oak from the best forests of the United States (Missouri and Virginia) and France (Allier), and with different levels of toasting.

Within its maximum respect for tradition, Ramón Bilbao has the latest in quality control. This is supported by its ISO 9002 quality control certificate, achieved in 1995, and environmental certification ISO 14001, achieved in 1999. It was the first winery in D.O.Ca. Rioja, and in Spain, to achieve the latter for the production of still wines.

Wines from Ramón Bilbao

Below is the list of wines made by the winery Ramón Bilbao:

Ramón Bilbao Rosado is made 100% with Grenache, recovering a classic wine from this area, which is used to the pale tones of the rosé and the power of subtleness. On the nose, it has notes of fresh fruit, nuances of Amalfi lemon, freshly cut flowers, and cherries. In the mouth, it is light, fresh in its unfolding, with a silky finish and nuances of cherries.

Lalomba Rosée is the winery’s latest creation. It is made with 90% Grenache and 10% Viura. The must is obtained using the traditional saignée method by gravity, without automatic pressing. The yield is of around 40%. Once the fermentation has concluded, the wine is racked for its subsequent maceration with its fine lees for a month, approximately. It has a soft pinkish salmon colour. On the nose, floral and subtle aromas are defined until they compose a palette of fresh red fruit, roses and cherries. In the mouth, it is light and juicy, with the expression of the flowers and fruit, and delicate citrus touches that harmonise in a creamy and round finish.

Ramón Bilbao Crianza is one of the most traditional red wines of the winery. It is made 100% with Tempranillo grapes, and it is aged for 14 months in American oak barrels. This wine is fine, elegant, direct and without frills. It is easy to drink, and the fruit blends nicely with the toasted and spiced nuances from its ageing.

Ramón Bilbao Reserva is made with 90% Tempranillo Riojano, 10% Mazuelo and Graciano. It follows a classic pattern of ageing in American oak for 20 months. For years, its extra fruit due to its intense maceration has placed it among the most modern wines in D.O.Ca. Rioja.

Ramón Bilbao Gran Reserva is made with 90% Tempranillo, 5% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo, from old vineyards that are between 60 and 65 years old. After a selection of the best grapes, the wine fermented at a controlled temperature and remained 30 months in American oak barrels. After bottling, it remained another 36 months in the underground bottle rack, completely still and in the dark.

Ramón Bilbao Reserva Original represents a return to the winery’s roots, to its beginnings, when a dream that has now come true had just started, after years of dedication and effort. A dream that is transmitted in this wine that marks a new page in the history of Ramón Bilbao’s logbook and forges its unique personality. Ramón Bilbao Reserva Original breaks the mold in a category like ‘Reserva’. It is made with 100% Tempranillo from two vineyards, located at 650 metres of altitude in Villalba (La Rioja), near the cultivation limit areas on the hills of Sierra Cantabria. A unique setting, with a winemaking heritage that combines knowledge and tradition with an area that offers a landscape of old vineyards, ideal for the production of wines with great ageing potential. It goes through the malolactic fermentation in barrels, and then it is aged for 20 months in single-use 225-litre French oak barrels. Its limited production varies depending on the harvest, since it is a single-farm wine (vino de finca). However, it never exceeds 50,000 bottles. On the nose, it is complex and fragrant, with a range of aromas and nuances of blackberries, liquorice, and background notes of clove and graphite. In the mouth, it is lively and enveloping, with sensations of plums, and balsamic and mineral notes that blend in a tasty, persistent and extremely round finish.

Ramón Bilbao Edición Limitada is a varietal red wine made 100% with Tempranillo. And as its name suggests, it is always a limited production wine, since it comes from a selection of 598 barrels (102 of American oak from Virginia, and 496 of French oak from Allier) with an ageing of 15 months. This wine is modern, very expressive, that presents a structure designed in a sweet and rich fruitiness.

Ramón Bilbao Viñedos de Altura is made with 50% Tempranillo and 50% Grenache, cultivated at the same altitude. The ageing took place for 15 months in 240 barrels, which always results in a wine with a very limited production. This wine aims for elegance, fruit and the complexity of the most extreme vineyards.

Mirto is the latest addition of Ramón Bilbao to its collection of its most modern Rioja wines. It is a red wine made 100% with Tempranillo grapes from a selection of the oldest vineyards, of an average age above 70 years. Its ageing took place for 24 months in new barrels made of French oak from Allier, and its production is limited. This red wine has a clean aroma, with notes that reminisce black plum jam with balsamic notes of cedar and tobacco, on a background of incense and smoke. In the mouth, it is ample, full-bodied and meaty, with a good fruity texture and a consistent and rich finish.
