5 whiskies you should try at least once in your life

17/05/2023 Spirits

Are you a whisky lover keen to explore new flavours? Or maybe you are new to the world of whisky and want to find out which are the best to try? Either way, you are in the right place. Here are 5 whiskies, for beginners and experts alike, that you should try at least once in your life. From the rich, smoky flavour of Scotch whisky to the smoothness and elegance of Japanese whisky. A journey for the senses that is not to be missed.

Let’s start!

5 whiskies you won’t forget

1. Auchentoshan 12 years

If whisky piques your curiosity, but you’re overwhelmed by so much variety and not sure where to start, don’t worry, we have a perfect recommendation for beginners. Auchentoshan 12 years is smooth and delicate, an excellent Scottish whisky that is perfect for those just starting out in the wonderful world of whisky. Awarded a gold medal at the International Spirits Challenge 2021, Auchentoshan 12 years is a single malt that doesn’t have those intense aromas of smoke and peat. It is a seductive whisky, with delicious hints of toffee and citrus. For a very reasonable price, it sacrifices neither complexity nor elegance.

2. Kilchoman Machir Bay Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Machir Bay is a small but spectacular bay just a few metres from the newest distillery on Islay, Scotland. The last distillery to be established before this one was 124 years ago. Set up in 2005, Kilchoman produces whiskies that have the undisputed distinctive of Islay, but with an aromatic character where an interesting floral complexity appears. Kilchoman Machir Bay is a blend of whiskies aged between 4 and 5 years, matured in casks that have contained bourbon and sherry wine. A whisky with citrus and vanilla notes accompanied by a delicious floral and fruity intensity and the complexity of the smoke that brings hints of toasted marshmallow, caramel, honey, and sherry-soaked fruit, with a delicious spicy and saline nuance. A real discovery for those who love whiskies with sea peat aromas!

3. Hibiki Japanese Harmony Whisky

Japanese whisky is no longer a fad, it’s here to stay! Hibiki, which means harmony in Japanese, was set up in 1989 to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Suntory distillery. It has since become one of the most sought after and highly rated Japanese whiskies by consumers. It is made from a blend of malt whiskies aged in different types of casks: white oak, American oak, casks that have contained sherry wines and, of course, mizunara oak casks, which add a touch of Japanese authenticity. Delicate and perfumed, without sacrificing complexity and personality, Hibiki Japanese Harmony Whisky is definitely one of the whiskies to try.

4. Tomatin Legacy

We are honoured to present you with the “World's Best Whisky 2022”, according to the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC). This should be reason enough to try it at least once in your life, but we’ll give you a few more. Considered the whisky that showcases the softer side of the Highlands, Tomatin scored 99 points out of 100, competing with more than 1,400 entries. This whisky ages in virgin oak barrels and barrels that contained bourbon, which gives it a soft sweetness. It offers aromas of tropical fruits accompanied by a touch of honey and spicy nuances of anise, vanilla and cinnamon. A truly delicious and seductive whisky. And if all these reasons are not enough for you, take a look at its price. Few whiskies give so much for so little.

5. Johnnie Walker Blue Label

Only one in ten thousand casks is of the quality required to make Johnnie Walker Blue Label, whose originality is based on the blending of some of Scotland’s rarest and most exceptional whiskies. If you are passionate about the world of whisky, this is one that, if you ever have the opportunity to try it, you really can’t miss! The nose is incredibly smooth. A dry smoky note appears that blends harmoniously with the sweet aroma of raisins. The palate reveals itself layer after layer: fruits accompanied by citrus notes, honey and spices that ends with a round and velvety finish, with hints of chocolate and smoked notes. In short, a masterpiece, worthy of the most extraordinary occasions.

Whisky is a drink that offers a unique sensory experience and has won over countless palates around the world. Find your favourite at Decántalo and, either on its own or in cocktails, enjoy its delicious complexity and variety of flavours and aromas.
