A Priorat Wine at the Nobel Prize Award Banquet

19/12/2017 Breaking news

Nobel Prize Award Banquet. 1350 guests. Blue Hall of the Stockholm City Hall. The king and queen of Sweden, Carl Gustaf and Silvia. And there, throughout the ceremony, a small wine from Priorat made its way: Formiga de Vellut.

The banquet of the Nobel Prize Award Ceremony is one of the most exquisite events in the world. The menu is a well-kept secret, preserved until diners sit at the table. This year, the menu was based on seasonal products, with a high content of vegetables. The diners were able to enjoy a starter based on artichokes, lamb, potato terrine with Svedjan cheese, yellow beetroot, apple salad and rosemary juice. The menu was prepared by 40 chefs and served by 190 waiters.

To accompany this delicious soiree, the wines chosen were Viña Errázuriz Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc 2016, a Chilean white wine, Taittinger Brut Réserve, a champagne, and Formiga de Vellut, an organic wine from Priorat. A powerful wine, with aromas of red and black fruit, made with Grenache, Carignan and Syrah, made by Clos Galena, a small winery with a highly-controlled and careful production.

However, for Formiga de Vellut getting all dressed up isn’t something new. It was already awarded the Gold Medal of the Mundus Vini Bio Fach for the vintages of 2009, 2012 and 2013. This is one of the most important international competitions at the level of organic wines.

Formell de Vellut never leaves anyone indifferent. A powerful but velvety wine, with ripe and fresh tannins. According to the Svenska Dagbladet, one of the great Swedish newspapers: “The main course was fine, but the wine was incredibly good”.
