Wine by the winery Avancia

Pioneers in introducing the Godello grape in the United States

Avancia is a project of Grupo Jorge Ordóñez in Galicia, specifically within D.O. Valdeorras. The distinguishing mark of Bodegas Avancia is the artisan production from local varieties of the area, the Godello and the Mencía, from very old vineyards, with lower yields, but able to provide more quality and uniqueness to their wines in every way. These wines are instilled with the spirit and the terroir of the area and, at the same time, they are very in line with modern tastes.

More about Avancia

Bodegas Avancia is part of Grupo Jorge Ordóñez, a select number of Spanish boutique wineries that produce some of the most prestigious and internationally-awarded wines. A group with a total of 13 wineries in 12 different Spanish Denominations of Origin and one wine Vino de la Tierra de Castilla, reason why the group controls a total of around 1,000 hectares of vineyard.

Currently, the executive management of Bodegas Grupo Jorge Ordóñez, which up until mid-2015 was held by his sister, Victoria Ordóñez, is now personally handled by Jorge Ordóñez, keeping the singularities and identity traits of each winery intact.

On the other hand, at the beginning of 2016, Nacho Álvarez Losada, became the person in charge of the oenological area. The young oenologist, born in the Bierzo of León, began his career in Grupo Jorge Ordóñez three years back, as the person in charge of the production of wines from Bodegas Avancia . His work has led him to be chosen to manage and control the production of Jorge Ordóñez wines in seven of the Denominations of Origin in which they make their wines, in addition to Valdeorras, Rías Baixas, Toro, Calatayud, Málaga, Rueda and Montsant.

History of the winery

In the 80s, researchers from Galicia were recovering the Godello grape variety, and Jorge Ordoñez was the first one to introduce Godello wines into the United States in the 90s. During the following years, Ordoñez was the only importer that offered this unique wine. Jorge always dreamed of having his own project with Godello grapes, and Bodegas Avancia is today the result of that dream.

Bodegas Avancia is located near the town of O Barco de Valdeorras, in the province of Orense, within D.O. Valdeorras. The grapes of Bodegas Avancia come from the oldest vineyards of O Barco de Valdeorras, located on the hillsides, on the mountain terraces, between 450 m and 500 m above sea level.
The composition of the soil is of metamorphic slate, although some granite can be seen in other vineyards of this denomination. However, the soils of Mencía are a mixture of decomposed limestone and quartz.

As for the vineyards, the winery is supplied with grapes grown in different areas and latitudes. Therefore, the grapes for their Avancia Mencía wine come from the oldest vineyards of the winery, planted in 1904 and 1910, on sloping hillside terraces at 450 m above sea level.
The grapes for the Avancia Cuvee Mosteiro, Avancia Rose, and Avancia Cuvee de O come from vineyards planted between 1950 and 1970 in the municipalities of Seadur, Larouco, Seixo de Abajo, Raxoa, O Bolo, Córgomo, and O Barco.
The grapes for Avancia Godello come from four different Godello vineyards: the Airoa, which was planted in 1906 in Alixo and O Barco; the Barreiros vineyard planted in 1920 and located in Mones and Villamartín de Valdeorras; the vineyard of Mones planted in 1902 and located in Mones, Villamartín de Valdeorras; and a vineyard located in Córgomo Villamartín de Valdeorras, planted in 1960.

Wines from Bodegas Avancia

Avancia Cuvée de O is made from the Godello grape from the vineyards of Barreiros (3.7 hectares) and Ferreiruscas (5.6 hectares). They are located on the north bank of the river Sil with a south-east orientation, cultivated on slate soils with small amounts of quartzite. 25% of the wine ferments in barrels, and the rest is fermented in stainless steel deposits. The wine is aged on its lees for 6 months. It is an expressive bright straw-coloured wine with a clean aroma of fresh fruit and white flowers. In the mouth is tasty and fruity, with good acidity and very well balanced.

Avancia Godello is born from four different vineyards of Godello. Airoa, 1902 vineyard in the Raxoa area; Barreiros, 1960 vineyard in Seadur (Larouco); Cecilio, 1906 vineyard in Mones (Petin) and A Senra, 1920 vineyard in Corgomo (Villamartin de Valdeorras). It is fermented and aged in large French oak barrels for 7 months. It is a bright straw-coloured wine with aroma of white flowers, fresh fruit, expressive, fine lees and dried herbs; tasty, fruity, with good acidity and very balanced.

Avancia Rosé is a single-variety of Mencía from vineyards planted between 1950 and 1970 in the municipalities of Seadur, Larouco, Seixo de Abajo, Raxoa, O Bolo, Córgomo, and O Barco. The vines are planted in vase-shape and oriented to the South, on slopes with decomposed slate and black quartz soils, at 550 metres of altitude. The wine is fermented in large French oak barrels, and aged on its lees for three months. It is a very perfumed red-fruit wine with floral aromas, with touches of smoked minerals and citrus. In the mouth it is mineral, with soft aromas of raspberry and orange that become more spicy with aeration. It is the only rosé from Galicia that is fermented in barrels. However, it is not included in the D.O., since it does not go through the production process of rosé wines.

Avancia Mencía is made from grapes that come from the oldest vineyards planted in 1904 and 1910 on terraces, on the hillsides of the mountains, at 450 m above sea level. The grapes are subjected to a selection in the winery before the winemaking process. The grapes are pressed and the malolactic fermentation is carried out in new French oak barrels. The wine is aged for 14 months in new French oak barrels and it is bottled without filtering, stabilising or clarifying. It is an attractive red-cherry wine with violet highlights, with aromas of wild raspberry and black cherries. Mineral and with a balsamic touch that leads to silky textures.

Avancia Cuveé de O Mencía is made from 7 hectares of vineyards distributed in O Bolo and Villamartín de Valdeorras, on the north bank of the river Sil, with south-east orientation, planted on slate soils with small amounts of quartzite. The malolactic fermentation is performed in French oak barrels from Burgundy, and the wine remains 8 months in the barrel.

Avancia Cuveé Mosteiro is made with grapes from Mencía vineyards planted between 1950 and 1970 in the municipalities of Seadur, Larouco, Seixo de Abajo, Raxoa, O Bolo, Córgomo, and O Barco, oriented to the south on hillsides with decomposed slate and black quartz soils, at 550 metres of altitude. The malolactic fermentation is carried out in new French oak barrels, and the wine is aged in French oak barrels for 12 months and bottled unfiltered. It is a cherry-coloured wine with a garnet rim, and aromas of ripe fruit and wild herbs. It is earthy, spicy, with creamy oak; balanced, tasty, long and balsamic.
