About Terras Gauda
In 1989, when José María Fonseca resolved to make a significant change in his life and delve into the world of wine, he was certain of one thing: the ideal location for his venture would be the subzone of O Rosal, on the right bank of the lower Miño. And why not? This enchanting corner of Galicia not only boasts more hours of sunshine than any other area in the region, but its soils, rich in slate and schist, impart wines with reduced acidity and an aromatic evolution that renders them true treasures.
However, Fonseca understood that creating something truly extraordinary required more than just vineyards. He needed a name that captured the unique spirit of this land. Thus, Terras Gauda was born, a choice that was far from random. Firstly, due to its Latin meaning: "joyful land," a tribute to the vibrant and luminous character of the region. Secondly, because "Gauda" was the name the Suebi, a Germanic people who traversed Galicia in the Early Middle Ages, used to refer to the locality of A Guarda, a gem bathed by the Miño.
The outcome of this vision is a wine that has become the flagship of the D.O. Rías Baixas: Terras Gauda. A blend of indigenous varieties—albariño, loureiro, and caíño—cultivated in the O Rosal Valley at varying altitudes. The albariño and caíño, planted at 50 metres above sea level, benefit from the warmth and humidity to produce concentrated grapes with lower acidity. Meanwhile, the loureiro, at 150 metres, matures more slowly, contributing an aromatic intensity and smoothness on the palate that make the wine shine.
It all begins with a manual harvest in 20 kg boxes (because grapes must be handled with care, like a good friend). Then, each variety is vinified separately, first macerating in the cold to extract their aromas, then fermenting at low temperatures in stainless steel tanks with native yeasts. And like any good team, the varieties come together at the end in a harmonious blend that is stabilised and bottled, ready to captivate palates.
And the result? A wine that transports you directly to the sunlit slopes of O Rosal with every sip. Because if wine is joy, at Terras Gauda, they know precisely how to bottle it.
