About Nicolas Maillart Champagne Les Coupés Ecueil 1er Cru Franc de Pied Blanc de Noirs
Nicolas Maillart is the most recent generation of a great family of winegrowers. Backed by his studies in Engineering and Enology, Nicolás now has responsibility for a job that has been passed down from generation to generation. Evidently, his studies support these expertise but his work also gives great importance to the value of tradition, those things parents teach their children, and are not to be undervalued. Many of the fruits of these expertise are being harvested today, one example being Nicolas Maillart Champagne Les Coupés Ecueil 1er Cru Franc de Pied Blanc de Noirs, a sparkling wine made from old ungrafted vines of the Pinot Noir variety, without rootstock.
In particular, these vineyards, which lie on the southern hill of the Ecueil Premier Cru, in the north of the A.O.C. Champagne, were planted in 1973 by Nicolas’ father from different vines that had resisted phylloxera. With this in mind, a large part of the vineyard was grafted (this is the only way they could be saved from this insect that attacked the roots); but a small number resisted with its own roots, and these are now the origin of a very special and limited champagne, which is only made in great vintages.
Nicolas Maillart Champagne Les Coupés Ecueil 1er Cru Franc de Pied Blanc de Noirs is vinified in wooden vats and has a long aging time here, and hardly any intervention. Not touching the wine or interfering with how it develops is the only way to maximize the potential of the area’s sandy Thanetian soils. After disgorging by hand and a minimum of three months in the bottle, Nicolas Maillart Champagne Les Coupés Ecueil 1er Cru Franc de Pied Blanc de Noirs is released for sale unfiltered and unclarified, in its purest state, proving that experience is always worth a great deal. There’s no substitute for it.
2018 | Nicolas Maillart Les Coupés Ecueil 1er Cru Franc de Pied Blanc de Noirs 2018 is a shapely, finely tuned, elegant and savoury sparkling wine. Its coppery colours and reflections stand out, as well as the fine bubbles and subtle rising string of beads. The nose is undoubtedly dominated by Pinot Noir, offering ripe fruit and hints of caramel with milk. This is complemented by the woody and smoky notes typical of the long aging. The palate is dense and fresh, with a broad, mineral finish. Well structured and persistent. |
