About Josep Foraster Julieta

Traditionally, the trepat grape was extensively used for crafting rosé wines. This trend persisted until 1987 when it was vinified as a red wine for the first time. The trepat, an indigenous variety from Cataluña, specifically from the D.O. Conca de Barberà, is a grape characterized by its light body, fruity notes, and bright acidity. For years, it has been the centerpiece of cooperatives in the region. Nevertheless, some wineries have broken away from convention, such as Josep Foraster, which has been an early advocate for 100% trepat red wines. A testament to this is the Josep Foraster Julieta.

Globally, there are approximately 1,100 hectares of trepat vines. Of these, 1,015 are located in Conca de Barberà, where Josep Foraster cultivates 30 hectares of vineyard in the town of MontBlanc, in Tarragona (south of Cataluña). In the case of Josep Foraster Julieta, the grapes are exclusively sourced from the 80-year-old Vinya de Montornès, situated 450 meters above sea level. Its position in the shadow of the Sierra de Miramar and its northern exposure directly impact the ripening of the grapes, as the vines contend with limited sunlight and clayey, cold, and shallow soils. In this area, with its Mediterranean climate marked by humid winds and cold frosts, the stark contrast between day and night temperatures is quite common.

The vineyards are cultivated following strict organic practices, with minimal intervention and a preference for manual labor, such as hand-harvesting. The grapes are picked into 18 Kg boxes and selected right in the field. Subsequently, in the winery, all processes adhere to the principle of minimal interference. Immediately upon arrival, clusters of Josep Foraster Julieta are left to rest for 24 hours in refrigeration chambers to reduce their temperature. This technique, employed by many wineries, aims to extract the maximum amount of the variety's inherent aromas. Once the grapes have been cooled to below 5°C, the production of Josep Foraster Julieta diverges into two paths: on one hand, 20% of the grapes are processed and fermented with stems; the remainder of the harvest will ferment destemmed. Both processes, conducted exclusively in concrete eggs, occur spontaneously with indigenous yeasts and include a maceration period of 30 days. Finally, Josep Foraster Julieta is racked and pressed, yielding a wine that will age for seven months in concrete eggs, remaining in contact with its lees. During this period of rest, Josep Foraster Julieta will undergo malolactic fermentation, further refining its character.

A luxurious production process befitting a true gem such as the trepat.
