About Frontonio Microcósmico Garnacha
Frontonio Microcósmico Garnacha is a red wine crafted by Bodegas Frontonio, located in Épila, IGP Valdejalón.
Bodegas Frontonio was established in 2008 by two Aragonese friends, Fernando Mora, a Master of Wine, and Mario López, an oenologist at Bodegas Borsao.
The aim of Bodegas Frontonio is to elevate the Valdejalón region and its vineyards, primarily planted with old Garnacha vines, benefiting from a continental Mediterranean climate. They directly manage approximately 50 hectares, certified organic since 2017. Most of the vineyards are around Épila, with varying ages, exposures, altitudes, and soil types. The climate is continental Mediterranean, with low rainfall (200-500 l/m2/year), 300 hours of sun annually, and many windy days due to El Cierzo.
Currently, Bodegas Frontonio produces garage wines in the backroom of a small bulk wine cellar, vinifying with minimal intervention, parcel by parcel. The result is excellent wines, authentic and characterful.
Frontonio Microcósmico Garnacha is crafted from Garnacha of old vineyards situated in Épila, at 350 metres altitude on limestone soils with a clay layer that allows good moisture retention from the region's scarce rainfall.
The harvest is done manually with grape selection in the vineyard. After a classic vinification, it undergoes malolactic fermentation and less than a year of ageing in concrete tanks. Five percent is aged in 300-litre oak barrels.
Fernando Mora describes Frontonio Microcósmico Garnacha as "an austere and sincere Garnacha." Austerity is not synonymous with poverty; on the contrary, it speaks to the idea that "less is more." Less intervention and artifice for a red wine that is the pure and natural expression of the grape. A personality that freely speaks of a traditional winemaking style, the Aragonese wine that Frontonio Microcósmico Garnacha pays homage to, a juicy and expressive red where the fruit takes centre stage.
