About Domaine Jean Michel Gerin La Champine Syrah

For much of the 20th century, the A.O.C. Côtes Rôtie remained in the shadow of its illustrious neighbour, the A.O.C. Hermitage, with its wines virtually unknown and fetching no more than a few cents post-World War II. However, a gradual renaissance has been unfolding, spearheaded by vintners like Domaine Jean-Michel Gerin.

Deeply rooted in its terroir, the Gerin family has been an integral part of the region, in the village of Ampuis, where six generations have tenaciously cultivated their vineyards. The founders, Marcel Gerin and his son, Alfred Gerin, acquired land to produce these tannic, robust, and refined wines that benefit immensely from extended aging. Today, the family's dedication and profound passion for their vineyards endures, with an expanded portfolio of wines. Among their essential offerings is the Domaine Jean Michel Gerin La Champine Syrah.

As the name suggests, Domaine Jean Michel Gerin La Champine Syrah is a single-varietal wine made from syrah, the undisputed sovereign grape of the northern Rhône Valley. Believed to have been introduced to the region by the Romans, the forefathers of winemaking in the area, this red variety is permitted to be blended with a small percentage of viognier (a white grape). For Domaine Jean Michel Gerin La Champine Syrah, the grapes are sourced directly from Ampuis and the northern Ardèche, where the vineyards are organically farmed—a practice consistently employed by the winery since 2020. The vines, aged between four and fifteen years, thrive in metamorphic rock soils, predominantly composed of mica schist, loess, and granite.

Domaine Jean Michel Gerin La Champine Syrah undergoes harvesting, destemming, and a four-week maceration process, during which a rich array of flavors and aromas are extracted. Following this, Domaine Jean Michel Gerin La Champine Syrah is transferred to fermentation tanks, where it gradually transforms into wine. After fermentation, Domaine Jean Michel Gerin La Champine Syrah is aged for one year in a combination of oak barrels (accounting for 60% of the cuvée) and stainless steel tanks (comprising the remaining 40% of the cuvée).

Delightfully flavorful, smooth, and well-rounded.
