About Domaine Jean Michel Gerin Côte Rôtie La Viallière
In the heart of the A.O.C. Côte-Rotie, adjacent to the village of Ampuis, lies La Viallière. This vineyard, with its steep inclines, stands as one of the most formidable terrains; not solely due to its elevation but also because of the laborious challenge presented by the precipitous soils, ranging from 180 to 325 meters above sea level (easier said than done, right?). Nevertheless, Jean Miguel Gerin is undaunted by strenuous work and bravely tackles these slopes in his wine Domaine Jean Michel Gerin Côte Rôtie La Viallière.
Perhaps it is this boldness and resolve that has elevated him to become a leading figure in this northern region of the Rhône Valley. In the mid-20th century, the name of the A.O.C. Côte-Rotie was barely whispered in the world. Now, it resonates powerfully and Domaine Michel Gerin is among those making the most noise. Domaine Jean Michel Gerin Côte Rôtie La Viallière is a red wine that began production in the year 2003. Until then, this family-run business - established in 1983 - had not taken an interest in the soils of this area, where metamorphic rocks (schists and mica schists) are plentiful. This foundation, which varies in mixture depending on the location, is highly fractured, allowing the vine roots to penetrate and access water and nutrients. Generally, drought should not pose a problem in this area, since although the summers are hot, rainfall tends to be regular.
In the winemaking process, Domaine Jean Michel Gerin Côte Rôtie La Viallière is crafted in the traditional manner, with extended ageing periods in the cellar. Following fermentation, Domaine Jean Michel Gerin Côte Rôtie La Viallière will spend nearly two years (approximately 22 months) maturing in both new and used oak barrels, evolving and smoothing out. In the first vintage, this period of maturation was even longer, as Domaine Jean Michel Gerin Côte Rôtie La Viallière did not emerge until the year 2009. Since then, Jean-Michel Gerin continues to astonish with this wine, elevating the appellation to meet expectations. Nothing more, nothing less. It is well-deserved. After so many years of dedication and hard work, they have earned it. Long live Jean-Miguel Gerin and long live Domaine Jean Michel Gerin Côte Rôtie La Viallière!
