Cartago Paraje del Pozo is a red wine produced by Bodegas y Viñedos Maurodos in Villaester, D.O. Toro.
At the head of this winery, we find Mariano García, an oenologist known for being the creator of Mauro and for his work in the distinguished winery Vega Sicilia, where he was in charge of the production of 30 vintages of their legendary wines.
Bodegas y Viñedos Maurodos has 100 hectares of vineyards in Toro, most of them planted with the Tinta de Toro and Grenache varieties, distributed among different farms between Villaester and San Román de Hornija. All of their vineyards have the organic certification, although they do not use it in any of their wines.
Their philosophy is to produce wines extracting the astounding potential of the soil and the particular expression of a historical area in the creation of reds.
Cartago Paraje del Pozo is a wine made from Tinta de Toro and 10% of other more aromatic varieties, which come from Cartago, a natural site where pastures and pine forests prevail on the banks of the Duero river, in the municipality of Castronuño. Within this area we can find the farm El Pozo, a plot of 5 hectares planted ungrafted in the 1970s. These vines are located at 700 metres of altitude on extremely sandy soils with clay in the deeper layers and very deficient levels of organic matter.
Harvest is performed by hand and grapes are selected in the actual vineyard. Once the harvest arrives at the winery, the grapes are destemmed, and after a soft crushing, they begin the alcoholic fermentation with local yeasts. The maceration lasts two weeks. It is aged for 36 months in new and used French oak barrels.
