San Román is a red wine from Toro produced by Bodegas Maurodos.
Leading this winery is Mariano García, a winemaker known for producing Mauro together with the prestigious Vega Sicilia winery, where he was also responsible for the development of 30 legendary vintages of their wines.
San Román is a varietal Tinta de Toro, a typical variety from Toro. The grapes come from different vineyards planted with old vines 45 years old at an altitude of 750 metres above sea level, with stony and sandy-clay soils.
The climate is an extreme and continental with very little rain, lots of sunshine and strong thermal contrasts between day and night, which favours the correct ripening of the grapes. Each plot is vinified separately.
San Román spends 24 months aging in barrels of French and American oak that are renewed by 20% with each vintage.
San Román is a surprising wine. Full of fruit, it encapsulates all the character of the D.O. Toro without leaving behind elegance. A red touched by the magic of Mariano García, a winemaker with an impeccable track record in wineries like Vega Sicilia and Aalto.

San Román 2016 is a mature red wine with aromas of ripe red and black fruits, violet flowers, mineral notes and hints of liquorice over a dry ground background. On the palate it is fruity, deep and voluminous. It has fine and well integrated tannins. The finish is elegant and lingering.
San Román 2014 is a concentrated, powerful and elegant Toro wine. This year is distinguished by the good ripening and acidity of the grapes. A muscular wine, where the black fruit stands out with the spices of the Tinta de Toro and those of the barrel. The months it spends in barrels round this wine and give it finer tannins. Ideal to drink now or to save for a few years.
On the palate, San Román is creamy, powerful and elegant. Fruit is prominent with some toasted nuances. Structured, balanced with good acidity. Polished tannins and a long finish with persistent mineral memories.

Maurodos is probably one of the first wine projects that showed the extraordinary potential of the vineyards and wines of Toro. Maurodos, popularly known by its brand San Román, the name of its most emblematic wine, carries the signature of Mariano García, one of the most respected oenologists in Spain. He worked thirty years as the technical head of Vega Sicilia, before he started his own projects: the first one in Ribera del Duero with Bodegas Mauro in 1980, and a few years later, in 1997, in Toro, with Maurodos, where he has 100 hectares of vineyard, planted mostly with the variety Tinta de Toro and Grenache.
