Boekenhoutskloof Syrah is a single-variety Syrah red wine produced by the Boekenhoutskloof winery in the Wine of Origin Swartland denomination in South Africa.
The grapes used to make the Boekenhoutskloof Syrah come from two plots in Porseleinberg (80%) and Goldmine (20%), which have an exceptional terroir of shale soils, bedrock and decomposed mica.
The grapes are partially destemmed and vinified separately by vineyard. Fermentation takes place spontaneously in tulip-shaped concrete tanks with gentle pump-overs twice or three times a day. The resulting wine is devatted and transferred to two traditional 500-litre foudres and 600-litre demi-muids to age for around 18 months, depending on the vintage.
Boekenhout is the name of a native Cape beech tree that is highly prized for making fine furniture. The Boekenhoutskloof label includes seven chairs in various styles that are a tribute to the skills of craftspeople who are capable of creating beauty through natural sources, a philosophy that this winery shares in their quest for good winemaking.
