About Batič Malvasia
Nestled between Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia, Slovenia enjoys a centuries-old wine culture. The Vipava Valley, just along the border with Italy, is home to one of the most important wine regions where the land enjoys a Mediterranean and alpine microclimate along with a soil rich in loams, clays, flysch and sandstones. This is where Ivan Batič and his son Miha make wines that honestly reflect the land and the vintage, drawing on over 400 years of experience left on this very estate by the monks who made their wine for mass. Such is their respect for origins and the natural course of the environment that even Miha was banned from attending oenology school for fear of forgetting that nature and the sky are truly in charge.
It is under this philosophy of minimal intervention that natural wines like this Batič Malvasia are made. A white wine made from Malvasía vines with an average age of 35 years old planted on loam and clay soils, where biodynamic agriculture is practiced and ancient winemaking traditions of the Vipava Valley are applied. In the winery, the entire process follows the lunar calendar. The grapes undergo fermentation with their skins for 24 hours in open vats at uncontrolled temperatures and with native yeasts, after which the wine remains on its lees in stainless steel tanks.
Having an undeniable faith in the supernatural, the Batič family makes wines that are a true reflection of their natural habitat. And this is clear to see in their Batič Malvasia, a macerated, complex and mineral wine that can be enjoyed almost in bites.
