Wine by the winery Artadi

Wines from the Cosecheros Alaveses cooperative

Bodegas Artadi was founded in Laguardia back in 1985 as the´Cooperative Cosecheros Alaveses’', led by Juan Carlos Lopez de Lacalle. It was an association of a group of growers that wanted to collaborate on a business project based on the viticultural wealth of the La Rioja Alavesa region. They wanted the opportunity to prove that the use of carbonic maceration could also produce great wines, and this they did.
Artadi has a history linked to the memory and stories of the people who helped found the winery and make what it is today. Outside of the busy and overcrowded industry , Artadi is based on passion and respect for the land and vineyards.

More about Artadi

History of the Winery

The cooperative began by producing young wines and wines that would return a profit quickly, allowing the cooperative to secure funding for future projects. From the very beginning the winery has stuck to its belief that great wines are closely linked to the land they comes from, the vineyards and the people.

After this initial stage and the success of their young carbonic macerated red wine Artadi, as well as their Viñas de Gain crianza, the Bodegas Artadi Laguardia was officially formed in 1992, with Juan Carlos Lopez de Lacalle still at the lead, implanting changes and ideas that catapulted the winery to be one of the world’s benchmarks when it comes to Riojan wine. A calm and rational character, Juan Carlos works to consistently evolve the production of their wines, always in a natural and ordered manner.  Along with Jean François Gadeau in the technical team and Ruben Liquete in viticulture they have managed to create an excellent team that even today work to get the best results.

For a whole decade, the winery launched itself into prestige producing wines with a concept revolutionary until then in La Rioja, unique, personal, genuine wines, loyal to the vineyard, such as Viña El Pison, Grandes Añadas or Pagos Viejos, while expanding their wine horizons into new areas with the creation of Bodegas Artazu (Navarra) and Bodegas the Sequé (Alicante). All of this was part of a great wine business venture that soon would be rewarded by a great recognition of their wines both nationally and internationally.

However, in early 2016, Bodegas Artadi decided to leave the DOCa Rioja citing a difference in growing philosophy between the winery and the name.Artadi advocates recognition not of the winemaking region, but of the vineyards used, as it is the conditions of the vineyard that really give the wine its character. However, this is something that the DOCa Rioja was not willing to recognize.

Work philosophy

The working philosophy of the winery is marked by the perfect understanding of the vineyard. The wineries motto is that the wine is made in the vineyard, and it´s secrets are well guarded by the winery. It´s 88 hectares of vineyards, perfectly classified, lie on soils that are geologically and pedologically diverse, where the limestone, gravel and clay make up a particular balance of poor soils under an alternating climate. On all of their plot respectful viticulture is applied through ecolohical farming, which ensures that the wine is really able to loyally portray the character of the soil and vines. This respectful vineyard work is what is allowing Artadi demonstrate the unique plot identification of their wines.

At the winery, the grapes used to make the wine are rigorously selected, there is a very long maceration process, and meticulous aging in French new oak, which has a park with a selection of 1,300 barrels. Also the winery uses only native yeasts with their wines, boast a low sulfur content, no chemical treatments and works by gravity. In short, a way of being and acting in Artadi contrasts with the high yields of many vineyards in La Rioja, with old processing systems and over-sized wineries that put more emphasis on quantity than quality.

Artadi Wines

Artadi wines
are a real reflection of the terroir they come from.Currently these are the wines that the winery has on offer, characterised by based on the age of the vines and the terroir,

Artadi Tempranillo is a wine from their youngest vineyards. It has a clean profile with elegant red fruits, as well as a subtle tactile sensation of its tannins. It is a wine best enjoyed on the day, as well as rediscovering the generous expression of each vintage tomorrow. It is sold exclusively in restaurants and specialty shops.

Artadi is the winery’s classic wine. It is a wine full of personality developed by carbonic maceration. This is a young, natural and very fruity wine.

Viñas de Gain was the result of Juan Carlos Lopez first experimenting with ageing his wines. "Gain" in Basque means "height" and the first harvest was in 1987, made exclusively with Tempranillo grapes and aged in French oak barrels for 12 months. The grapes used to make this wine come twenty to thirty year-old selected vineyards located in the plots of San Martín, Las Ventas, Paulejas, San Julián, Santa Águeda, Castejones, Majadales, Ribaltayo Viejo, etc. This wine can be be enjoyed today, or one may rediscover it tomorrow. With a background of red fruit, the seasoned notes perfectly assemble and are highlighted with notes of oak aging.

Valdeginés comes vineyards which span over 7 hectares and are home to slightly compact calcareous clay soils. The vineyards are distinguished in slope with soils which are shallow and set on soft sandstone rock and the vineyards on terrace set on deeper and fresher soils. A wine with a well-defined and structured backbone that contains angular shapes which denote power. It presents itself with cautious speech in a submissive way when first entering the mouth, and the strength of its blended tannins and its powerful balance are appreciable in the mid-palate.

La Poza de Ballesteros comes from a plot that spans 3.6 hectares that has a west facing orientation. The soil is poor and pale-brown pigmented with white stains, which are lime formations. Its structure is quite homogeneous: clay-limestone and limestone. Its soil is very compact between 80 and 100 cm of depth. This vineyard gives us "thick stroke" wines. There is a presence of volume and the intense flavors of ripe fruit.

El Carretil grows on a vineyard that spans 5.3 hectares with a south-east exposure.Clay-limestone set on a sandstone rock with calcareous precipitation placed on the highest and poorest areas. In the deepest and freshest areas we find soil which lies on a significant clay-limestone layer. Depth between 40 and 90 cm. Has a clay-calcareous soil settled on a sandstone rock in the highest and poor areas, while in the deeper, cooler areas is soil seated on an important layer clay loam with a depth of between 40 and 90 cm. A wine with deep sensations: one can feel the vibrant fruit along with fibrous and sculpted tannins. A fusion between ripe flavor profiles and the precision of mineral characters, the projection of fine tannins and the encompassing texture of a delicate wine.

Grandes Añadas is a wine that was produced only when weather variables and qualitative balance of their best vineyards were conjoined streaking perfection. It is always a powerful wine rich in sensations, with complex and intense taste and aromatic notes with his bulky envelope tannins.

Viña El Pisón is a collaboration with Laorden Lacalle, which is the name of the company and personal property Juan Carlos Lopez de Lacalle, although in practice this wine is considered as an extension of this same winery.Born from a plot of 2.4 hectares in Laguardia, planted in 1945, where the balance between natural agents that shape their environment produces a wine full of subtle mineral character, fine, complex and delicate fruit, with spicy sequences and tannins enveloping volumes and caressing. It is a wine of surprising expressiveness, with a natural elegance of deep and changing sensations.

Pagos Viejos A wine crafted from the outstanding quality that hails from their vineyards named El Carretil, La Poza, Valdeginés, Los Olivos, Quintanilla, El Cerradillo and San Lázaro. Old vineyards with a balanced production, nurtured winemaking and thoughtful permanence. A wine with intense color, a complex bouquet, structured in the mouth, with an elegant and long, ligering finish, distinguished and enriched by the peculiarities of each vintage.
