About Werlitsch Ex Vero I
Although many initially viewed his wines with suspicion, Ewald Tscheppe never gave up. It was back in 2000 when, after visiting several organic vineyards, he decided to adopt this philosophy for his own production, and so began the story of a wine now considered one the best in the world: Werlitsch Ex Vero I.
To understand these wines you have to go to Leutschach, one of the five regions the Südsteiermark D.A.C is divided into, in the south of Styria, Austria (right next to the border with Slovenia). Between the sun and the fog, viticulture becomes hard work because most of the vines lie on very steep slopes. While Werlitsch Ex Vero I comes from the less steep vineyards, Werlitsch Ex Vero II and Werlitsch Ex Vero III grow on very steep sections, where it is almost impossible to work with any machines. This is a sample of the great diversity of soils that can be found in this area, with sands, slates, marls and limestones.
Werlitsch Ex Vero I is part of the house’s main range of wines and is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc (the most widely planted variety in Styria) and Chardonnay. Both varieties grow in a humid Mediterranean climate, with hot days and cool nights. The winery strictly follows the principle of non-intervention, with manual harvesting, destemming, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts in open wooden barrels, aging between 18 and 30 months in barrels and one year in the bottle.
