About Viña Cubillo

In the world of wine, adversity has often been the birthplace of genuine oenological treasures. Who could have imagined that noble rot would give rise to such exceptional sweet wines as Sauternes in France or Tokaji in Hungary? Or that the harsh conditions of extreme winters, capable of freezing grapes on the vine, would be the secret behind the vibrant sweetness and freshness of Ice Wines in Canada and Germany? However, if there is a clear example of resilience in the history of wine, it is the impact of phylloxera. This parasite devastated the French vineyards in the 19th century, forcing the exploration of new horizons. Thus, regions like Rioja not only became key suppliers but also absorbed and perfected the winemaking practices brought by the French vintners. Many settled in the Barrio de la Estación of Haro, transforming this small locality into a hub of innovation and quality. The result was an exponential growth in the quality of Rioja wines, cementing their reputation and gaining international recognition. Among these emerging gems stands out López de Heredia (Viña Tondonia), one of the most emblematic wineries in Haro, which remains a symbol of tradition, excellence, and oenological legacy. A true “cathedral of wine” that holds the perfect formula to create genuine oenological masterpieces that endure over time.

One of them, Viña Cubillo, is a blend of the classic Rioja varieties tempranillo, garnacha tinta, mazuela, and graciano sourced from an estate of the same name whose vines, over 40 years old, thrive on clay-limestone soils located at an altitude of 465 metres above sea level. When the grapes reach their optimal ripeness, they are harvested manually and immediately transported to the winery. There, a traditional vinification process is carried out with an ageing period of three years, with two rackings per year. Finally, the wine is clarified and bottled unfiltered.

With a great ageing potential of approximately 10 years, Viña Cubillo is a classic Rioja where tradition and innovation go hand in hand. A creation that not only honours the resilience that made Rioja a key region after the phylloxera but also reflects the spirit that turned Haro into an epicentre of vinicultural excellence, recognised worldwide.
