About Scala Cirò Rosso Classico Superiore Riserva

Scala Cirò Rosso Classico Superiore Riserva is a wood-aged red wine made by Scala with the Gaglioppo variety in the DOC Cirò, in Calabria (Italy). 
 
This estate dates back to the seventeenth century, but has been making wines since 1949. A centuries-old tradition that the Scala family has passed down from father to son and that is based on a rigorous work to ensure the highest quality standards in each bottle to reflect the most beautiful side of Calabria. 
 
Scala Cirò Rosso Classico Superiore Riserva comes from 3 hectares of vines planted in 1982 on sandy-clayey soils at about 200-250 metres above sea level. These are 40-year-old vines that are cultivated in a respectful way to maintain biodiversity. When the grapes reach optimum ripeness, they are harvested manually. 
 
Once the grapes have been selected in the winery, the Scala Cirò Rosso Classico Superiore Riserva vinification process begins. The grapes are fermented at a controlled temperature with a long skin-contact maceration for 12-16 months in stainless steel tanks followed by 6-12 months in barrels.
 
Made with the native Gaglioppo variety, Scala Cirò Rosso Classico Superiore Riserva is a warm red wine with a Mediterranean flavour.
2016
Scala Cirò Rosso Classico Superiore Riserva 2016 is a smooth red wine with intense aromas of red fruit jam, notes of sweet spices and hints of Mediterranean scrub and sea breezes. On the palate it is warm, intense and enveloping. A medium-bodied wine with a grainy texture and a seductively saline finish.
