About Raimat Turons de Vallcorba

If there is anyone who knows the terroir of the D.O. Costers del Segre in depth, it has got to be the Raventós family, founder of both the denomination and the renowned Raimat winery. Since 1914, they have worked to transform 3,200 hectares of barren land in Lleida (Catalonia) into an outstanding winery with a wide range of very good value wines and cavas. They were helped along by the construction of the Aragon and Catalonia canal in 1910, which allowed them to increase the amount of irrigated land and therefore produce the highest quality grapes. Raimat’s influence in the area has been so significant that even in 1930, when the grape harvest began, one of the problems was the rabbits because they ate the vine shoots, so people were encouraged to hunt them in the neighboring villages, which made famous a dish called “conejo a la Raimat” (Raimat rabbit).

But if Raimat is known for one thing, it is its constant production of high quality wines with their own personality. With the largest vineyard in Europe owned by the same family and with the experience of five centuries, there is no one better to produce their first estate wine: Raimat Turons de Vallcorba. A red wine made with the best Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from the Vallcorba hill. A select area with vines aged 25 years old on average and growing on limestone and pebble soils. The grapes are completely organic and the harvest is selectively hand-picked in 10 kg boxes to prevent the grapes from oxidising. In the winery, cold pre-fermentation maceration is carried out and fermentation takes place together with the skins in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 25-28°C with routine pumping over. Once fermentation is complete, contact with the skins is maintained and then the wine is separated from the skins and pressed ready for malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Finally, the wine is aged for 20 months in French oak foudres.

The result is Raimat Turons de Vallcorba, a small production of less than 7,000 bottles that starts life in the Raimat hills and is made through minimal intervention so that the vineyard can express its true self. A little gem!

 

2019 Raimat Turons De Vallcorba 2019 is an aromatic red wine where red and black fruit notes predominate accompanied by subtle spicy and vanilla aromas. The palate is rich and persistent. A red wine with noble tannins that is expressive and has an excellent balance between fruit and oak.

Raimat Turons de Vallcorba 2018 is a concentrated red wine with intense aromas of ripe red and black fruit, spiced notes and hints of wood. On the palate it is lush, noble and well-structured. A medium-bodied wine with fresh acidity, silky tannins and a long, lingering finish.
