Pago de Carraovejas Cuesta de las Liebres is a red wine produced by the Pago de Carraovejas winery in Peñafiel, D.O. Ribera del Duero.
Pago de Carraovejas is a winery founded by José María Ruiz, who produced his first crop in 1991.
The Carraovejas estate, with over 200 hectares of vineyards, is located on the outskirts of Peñafiel, one of the villages with the longest winegrowing traditions in Ribera del Duero, where the soils are loamy-chalky with red clay.
The climate in this area is oceanic with sparse rainfall and a lot of cold weather in the long and humid winter months, where temperatures can fall as low as -10ºC. Summers are very short and very hot, reaching temperatures of up to 40ºC, although the mornings and nights are usually cooler.
Each year Pago de Carraovejas makes an untiring effort to attain the levels of excellence in each and every one of its production process. In this way, the winery has managed to position itself as one of the best wineries in Ribera del Duero and in Spain.
Pago de Carraovejas Cuesta de las Liebres is a wine made with Tinto Fino from the vineyard of La Cuesta de las Liebres located on a steeply sloping hillside on limestone marl soils with outcrops of gypsum and calcareous salts. An extreme viticulture wine that is only produced in exceptional vintages.
The harvest is by hand in small boxes, with an initial selection in the vineyard. Once in the cellar, it passes over the selection table and on to the cold room. All movements in the hold are made using gravity. Alcoholic fermentation and malolactic fermentation are carried out in small wooden vats with native yeasts. It remains in extra fine grain French oak barrels for 24 months.
Pago de Carraovejas is now a consolidated reality in La Ribera del Duero, where tradition is combined with the necessary modernity of its facilities. However, it prefers the more conservative inertia by applying a personal rational philosophy aimed at the production of wines with studied percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, in a region where the Tinto Fino variety seems to be the absolute king. An open mind that is defined with a perfect symbiosis between research and creativity, viticulture and oenology, experience and technology, and innovation and personality.
Alma de Carraovejas came into existence under this philosophy, that of creating unforgettable experiences around wine and which harbors new projects which are today a reality, such as Ossian, which offers us the most elegant face of the Verdejo variety or Viña Meín, where Ribeiro wines, full of Atlantic freshness and also touched by the hand of the great Emilio Rojo, shine in all their splendor.
