About Mas Doix 1903 Coma de Cases Vinya Classificada

At Mas Doix, quality wine is cultivated in the vineyard. No secrets or magical formulas in the winery. The significant work must start in the field. Here, the relationship with the vineyard is crucial. For Mas Doix, biodynamics and ecology are the two essential paths to approach the old vines they cultivate in Tarragona, in the northwest of Spain, between Montserrat and Molló. Only then can they produce wines like Mas Doix 1903 Coma de Cases Vinya Classificada. 
 
Directly from a Vinya Classificada comes this single-varietal Garnacha born in Coma de Cases. This old vineyard, over 30 years old, was planted in 1945 in the municipality of Poboleda, with very unique characteristics that have made it one of the most singular plots in the D.O.Q. Priorat. Its slate slopes (licorella) and its western orientation (where it receives less sun in summer) are the two fundamental elements that make it so special. This last aspect is no trivial matter, as it is of great help, especially in summer, when the high temperatures of the Mediterranean climate become somewhat threatening. 
 
Throughout the entire interaction between man and vineyard, biodynamics will be fundamental. And in the winery, the same applies. Everything begins with manual harvesting and the transport of the clusters to the winery. Here, Mas Doix 1903 Coma de Cases Vinya Classificada is destemmed and subjected to a thorough inspection on the sorting table. From here, all the grapes are transferred to open French oak barrels where alcoholic fermentation will begin. For several weeks, the yeasts will be working, transforming the sugars in the must into wine. Once finished, Mas Doix 1903 Coma de Cases Vinya Classificada will undergo three weeks of maceration until it is finally pressed. In this step, only the free-run juice (the first liquid to come out under pressure) will be used, much cleaner and clearer than the rest of the press. Finally, Mas Doix 1903 Coma de Cases Vinya Classificada will undergo malolactic fermentation and will be aged for approximately one year until it is bottled without filtering or fining.
