Mas Coutelou 5SO Formidable is a natural, organic and vegan red wine made by Mas Coutelou in the French region of Languedoc-Roussillon (Vin de France) with the Cinsault variety.
Jean-Francois ('Jeff') Coutelou is a young winegrower from southern France who champions local varieties, organic farming and natural winemaking. He works on the Mas Coutelou family estate in Languedoc, a few kilometres from Béziers, and in 30 years he has gone from cultivating 20 hectares of vineyards to 13. The remaining 7 have been replanted with olive trees and other plants to increase biodiversity. As a result, he produces top quality grapes and formidable wines through great creativity and very little intervention.
Mas Coutelou 5SO Formidable comes from vineyards that have been certified as organic since 1987. These vines are planted on clay and limestone soils and no herbicides, pesticides or chemicals have been used on them for over 30 years. They are fully organic vines that enjoy a Mediterranean breeze and have a limited yield to achieve higher quality grapes.
Mas Coutelou 5SO Formidable is vinified with minimal intervention and very limited SO2. To do this, the grapes undergo spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and a brief, controlled aging. Finally the wine is bottled by gravity without filtration.
Jeff himself says: “happy wines from vines grown with love and joy”. And Mas Coutelou 5SO Formidable is proof of this. All the work here has the aim of respecting tradition and the environment and this results in very creative, vibrant and sweet red wines.
