Considered the father of natural wines, Jules Chauve champions winemaking without sulphur or yeast and using biodynamic vine cultivation. With plenty of scientific knowledge and huge practical experience, he has been a great influence on new generations of winegrowers who have wanted to showcase another natural Beaujolais. His most faithful disciple was undoubtedly Marcel Lapierre, a 3rd generation winemaker who decided to follow in his footsteps in Villié-Morgon with a vineyard planted entirely with Gamay grapes, resulting in wines full of deliciously silky and voluptuous fruit. A whole way of working that saw him become the father of natural Beaujolais wines and despite his death, his children Mathieu and Camilla have continued the work of the domain.
This cuvée, Marcel Lapierre Cuvée Camille Morgon, was made when Camille Lapierre decided to return to the family project in 2013 and also as a tribute to his grandfather Camille, Marcel’s father and the first member of the family to bottle wine. Sourced from a 1.0540 hectare plot of old vines in the Côte du Py with shallow sandy-granitic soils, the vines are organically cultivated without chemical fertilisers or herbicides and following biodynamic principles. The grapes are harvested by hand and once they reach the winery they go through a very traditional vinification process. Firstly the whole grapes undergo a semi carbonic maceration in the Beaujolais style without using SO2. They then undergo a spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts over 24 days in a conical wooden tank. The wine is then aged for 9 months in old 216-litre barrels. Finally, it is bottled unfiltered and with a minimal amount of sulphite.
Made from an exceptional terroir in the AOC Morgon and one of the most legendary domaines in Beaujolais, Marcel Lapierre Cuvée Camille Morgon is a beautiful example of a Beaujolais Cru. A wine with immense fruit and the faithful legacy of the father of natural Beaujolais wines.
