About Los Arrotos del Pendón Albarín 2019
This is a little known variety. When you type the name into a search engine, it might suggest that you have made a mistake, and assume you were trying to type Albariño. But you were not wrong. Leaving off the O was deliberate.
We are talking about the Albarín variety, the grape that originated in Asturias but that was historically also grown in Castilla y León. Most of the time, when we talk about this white variety, we talk about it in the past tense, because it has been on the verge of disappearing. This happened in the 1950s, with the depopulation of rural areas. However, fortunately, nowadays some wineries and small winegrowers in the V.T. Castilla - Leon are working hard to recover it.
One of those people is oenologist Raúl Pérez, who makes wines all over the world, but on this occasion he has decided to stay in this region, specifically in Villamañán (southeast of León), to make Los Arrotos del Pendón Albarín, a white wine made from this aromatic, early-ripening grape variety.
Los Arrotos del Pendón Albarín joins the other Arrotos del Pendón wines, a collection the winemaker made in previous years. The grapes used to make this wine come from old vines (over 50 years old), facing east, at an altitude of 810 metres on a clay soil with pebbles. Los arrotos del Pendón Albarín is fermented with native yeasts in 500 litre barrels, and will spend 4-5 years under a yeast cap.
2019 | Los Arrotos del Pendón Albarín 2019 is a profiled wine, made from Albarín grapes. On the nose it is predominantly citrusy, with hints of tangerine peel, white flowers, lime and ripe stone fruit. On the palate it is fresh and sweet, with an aftertaste of thyme. |
