La Poulosa is a red wine from the Bierzo region produced by La Vizcaína de Vinos. This wine is a blend of 4 different grapes varieties: mencía, bastardo and garnacha tintorera.

The grapes used to make La Poulosa come from old vines which are between 60 – 80 years old. These are grown on vineyards which span across two hectares of land and is located in one of the warmest areas of Valtuille. The local climate receives atlantic and continental influences, while the soils are shallow and clayey.

The harvest is carried out manually, carefully handling the fruit. After the grapes have been transported to the winery, they undergo a first fermentation in large wooden barrels of up to a 5,000 kg capacity. The juice of the wine macerates for 2-3 months, depending on the quality of the vintage and valuations of the winery’s team.

Finally, La Poulosa is aged in seven year old French oak barrels for 12 months. The wine is then bottled without being clarified or filtered.

 La Vizcaína de Vinos is a project conceived at the hands of the renowned winemaker Raúl Pérez and his nephew César Marquez. Located where the first winery of the Pérez family used to be, the various wine produced want to express the various nuances of terroir Valtuille de Abajo. This is a collection that seeks not to forget its origins and pay hommage to Raúls father and Césers grandfather.

La Vizcaína de Vinos is a relatively new project by the multifaceted winegrower and oenologist Raúl Pérez in his homeland: El Bierzo. He started and executed this project with his nephews, César Márquez and Nerea Pérez, the latter tragically deceased during the vintage of 2014. Raúl is a viticulture philosopher. He is also a consultant, as well as an oenologist, and he is the creator of genuine wines. All in all, quite a renown figure in our country. His name is on the lips of many good aficionados, and some of his wines are on the agenda of Robert Parker, although his labels are produced in quantities that seem more virtual than real.
Bierzo wine is on the rise. It is a region defined by its small scale work, with plots scattered around, very old vines, artisan work of the small scale wineries, and the character of their principal variety, the Mencía grape, which produces fresh, fruity and delicious wines. Although the region is well known mostly for its red wines, it also produces white and rosé wines. If the red wines here are defined by the Mencía variety, then the white wines here are defined by the Godello. Godello grape has great aromatic potential, as well as an excellent balance between alcohol and acidity.  Despite the great potential of El Bierzo, its rise in the wine world would not have been possible without two people: Raúl Pérez and Ricardo Pérez. Two great winemakers who in little time have been able to produce critically acclaimed wines from the Bierzo region.
