About Justinos Rich
Justinos Rich is a fortified wine made with the Tinta Negra variety in the DOP Madeira (Portugal) by Justino’s Madeira Wines, SA.
The winery was set up in 1870 in Madeira as a private family business under the name “Justin Henriques”. However in 1953, Justino’s Madeira became a public limited company. It is one of the oldest producers and exporters of Madeira wine and the best known internationally. It also currently has one of the largest stocks of Madeira wine on the island.
Justinos Rich starts life on small terraces lying on volcanic soil slopes. Because of the landscape, no machinery can be used. All work in the vineyard is carried out manually. They use traditional agriculture with the Latada vine training system. The harvest is carried out manually over several weeks depending on how ripe the grapes are. The grapes are then selected by quality.
After destemming the grapes, Justinos Rich macerates with its skins and beings fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Fermentation is stopped after 2 or 3 days by adding 96% grape spirit and the must is placed in stainless steel tanks for 3 months, with controlled temperatures (45 to 50°C) and reassembly. Finally, the wines are aged in oak barrels and/or mixed with wines that have been aged for at least 3 years.
Known for its sweetness, Justinos Rich is a smooth, balanced and sweet fortified wine.
