About Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon
History is penned by the courageous, and the future belongs to those who dare. In 1974, when Napa Valley was barely an untamed land still awaiting discovery, he not only identified the perfect terrain for a vineyard, but he also took a gamble. Today, his decisions have propelled him to the pinnacle with Joseph Phelps, his eponymous winery.
Among his ventures, Joseph Phelps also placed a bet on cabernet sauvignon, a French variety (typical of Bordeaux), which proved to find an ideal habitat in this corner of California. It was an unforeseen success. Since then, this grape has taken a leading role in the winery's productions (globally acclaimed). One such creation is the red Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon.
On the outskirts of St. Helena, within the A.V.A Napa Valley, Joseph Phelps owns an estate spanning 200 hectares, where various vineyards and plots are cultivated. Here, Phelps not only ventures with cabernet sauvignon but also with other grapes such as malbec (indigenous to Argentina) or cabernet franc. These varieties thrive on diverse soils - abundantly rich in clay, gravel, and sand - and under a distinctive Mediterranean climate, characterized by significant diurnal temperature variation and influenced by coastal fogs and winds (which contribute to cooling).
Since his years in the Navy, Joseph Phelps had harbored a curiosity and interest in wine. After expanding his father's construction business (in Greeley, Colorado) and dabbling in amateur winemaking at home, the entrepreneur decided to take the plunge and turn his dreams into reality. A fortuitous moment indeed! Blessed are those who dare! And, of course, blessed be the Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon!
2018 | Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 is an effervescent red, exuding immense vitality, persistence, and finesse. Adorned in a deep purple hue, the wine unfurls with aromatic bouquets of florals, cedar, ripe blackberries, and red currant jam. Undertones of lilacs, menthol, and sage also emerge. The palate is greeted with intensity and elegance, further layered with dark fruit nuances. Vibrant. The finish is extensive, characterized by a mineral complexity. |
