About Gérard Schueller Pinot Noir Le Chant des Oiseaux
When we say something is normal, we usually mean something common or something in the majority. However, this is a previously established convention, which it is thankfully getting easier and easier to move away from. In fact, if there is one thing that minimal intervention winemaking has shown us, it is that every wine is full of unusual characteristics that make it unique and original. It all depends on the terroir, the grape variety, the climate, the winemaker and everything that surrounds them. This is the philosophy used to make wines at Domaine Schueller, a family project with 6 hectares of land in the highest part of Alsace (France). This is where Bruno and his father Gérard hold everything lightly to produce free wines with exceptional character.
In the heart of the estate, in the village of Husseren-les-Châteaux, this father and son team make a Pinot Noir called Chant des Oiseaux. Made in limited amounts and not every year, this small production rare wine is made from a small 2.5 hectare plot of clay-limestone soils. These terroirs, although not classified as Grand Crus at the time, are currently sought after by the region’s great houses for their high quality. They work organically with biodynamic treatments and respecting the natural growth of the vine and the grape. The winery also keeps intervention to a minimum. They directly press the whole grapes and spontaneous fermentation is carried out with native yeasts. The wine then ages in barrels and is finally bottled without filtering, clarifying or adding sulphites.
Gérard Schueller Pinot Noir Le Chant des Oiseaux is an exceptional Pinot Noir. The most coveted wine of the Schueller family for its low production and generous complexity.
