Garnacha de Arrayán is a red wine from the D.O Méntrida region produced by the Arrayán winery. This wine is made using only Grenache grapes.
The grapes used to make this wine grow on vines that are over 60 years old and come from a small vineyard plot that does not even span one hectare. The plot is located 980 metres above sea level in the municipality of Cebreros, in the province of Avila The vineyard is also situated on slopes that have a gradient of almost 32%. The soils are slate. The local area is home to an extreme continental climate, where the long and cold winters are relieved by the montañosa Sierra de Gredos.
Once the harvest has been carried out, the grapes are taken in refigereated conditions in 20kg capacity boxes to the winery`s facilites, which avoids the grapes breaking and oxidising prematurely. At the winery, the grapes are incubated in open barrels, mainting their low temperature.
Subsequently, spontaneous fermentation takes place, during which soft plunging of the caps occur. Finally, the juice that is obtained ferments for 28days. Garnacha de Arrayán, before being bottled, then rests for 14 months in 300L capacity French oak barrels.
Arrayán is a company founded by José María Entrecanals and María Marsans who, from their La Verdosa estate, decided to embark on this personal project. They planted their first vines back in 1999, selling their first vintage in 2003.
