About Forlong Tintilla

At times, the most genuine tales of a land are penned with words that originate from afar. In the 18th century, an English merchant named Pedro Furlong acquired a modest estate in El Puerto de Santa María, in Cádiz, drawn by the allure and potential of the local soils. Over the years, the local pronunciation morphed that surname into Forlong, a word that, almost prophetically, resonates in English as "for a long time." This twist of fate gained full significance when Alejandro Narváez and Rocío Áspera reclaimed the property and established Bodegas Forlong, demonstrating that honouring family legacy and perseverance can create something destined to endure in memory.

From El Puerto de Santa María, within the production area of Vinos de la Tierra de Cádiz, emerges Forlong Tintilla. The vineyard is situated on albariza soil, a white, chalky earth rich in calcium carbonate, acting as a natural sponge by absorbing winter rainwater to nourish the vines during the drier months. The climate is distinctly Mediterranean but with a strong and direct Atlantic influence, where the poniente winds bring humidity and coolness at night, alleviating the day's heat. Here, the tintilla variety is cultivated, a historic and indigenous grape of the region known for its natural acidity and fruity character. The winery's cultivation philosophy is entirely organic, maintaining absolute respect for biodiversity and performing meticulous manual harvesting to select only the finest clusters.

The winemaking process is artisanal and meticulously executed to preserve the fruit's identity. Once the grapes are hand-harvested, the clusters are promptly transported for a manual selection of the best fruits. Subsequently, the grapes are gently destemmed to separate the berries from the stalks. The whole berries are placed in stainless steel tanks where the must ferments at a controlled temperature with indigenous yeasts, those naturally found on the grape skins. During this process, alcoholic fermentation occurs, and the must is left to macerate with its skins to extract the characteristic colour and aromas of the tintilla. Once completed, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation, a technical transformation that softens the wine by reducing its sharper acidity. Finally, the red wine is aged in used barrels and stainless steel tanks before being bottled without aggressive clarifications.

Forlong Tintilla is sincere, fresh, and imbued with the vibrant energy imparted by the albariza. An authentic wine that expresses the purest and most fruity aspect of the tintilla from Cádiz, remaining true to the concept of being enjoyed for a long time.
