About False Bay Whole Bunch Rosé

While Stellenbosch is South Africa’s largest and most famous wine region, recently the Coastal Region has had a very dynamic wine scene with great new producers emerging all the time. This is where we find False Bay Vineyards, an independent company owned by Waterkloof founder Paul Boutinot, whose goal is to make “real” yet affordable wines. This project didn’t come out of nowhere. It all started in 1994, long before founding Waterkloof, when Paul arrived in the Western Cape and discovered a treasure trove. He found some old vineyards overlooking South Africa’s most iconic bay, False bay (hence the winery’s name) and saved them from being lost in the big cooperative blends in order to make certified sustainable and naturally crafted wines by talented Waterkloof winemaker Nadia Barnard.

The truth is that False Bay Vineyards is proud to be a WWF (World Wildlife Fund) Biodiversity Champion and all of their wines are certified by WIETA (Wine and Agricultural Ethical Trade Association). This is clear to see in creations like this False Bay Whole Bunch Rosé. Made from old Cinsault bushes together with a small amount of Mourvedre, these are old vines with naturally low yields that retain good acidity. Organic and biodynamic practices are used and the grapes are harvested by hand. Once they reach the winery, the whole clusters are pressed and ferment spontaneously with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks and wooden vats. Finally, the wine rests on the lees for a minimum of three months before bottling.

As Nadia herself explains, False Bay Whole Bunch Rosé is a real wine from old coastal vineyards that aims to demonstrate how fine wines can be made in the coastal region and, at the same time, be available for a very reasonable price.

2021

False Bay Whole Bunch Rosé 2021 is a fresh, pale pink rosé wine with aromas of fresh fruit, soft floral notes and hints of spice. On the palate it is fresh, flavoursome and dry. A fine wine with vibrant acidity, a pleasant mid-palate and an elegant finish.
