About Domaine Mee Godard Grand Cras AOC Morgon Tinto
In 2013, during a tasting session with friends, it became crystal clear: the wines of Beaujolais possessed untapped potential. Every third Thursday of November, the name of this region, situated in the southern part of the Côte d’Or, resonated across the globe due to its famed and youthful Beaujolais Nouveaux; yet, Beaujolais is about so much more, harboring additional possibilities, distinct aromas, and unique flavors awaiting global discovery. All that was needed was the right showcase. And Mee Godard was prepared to do just that.
Specifically, Mee Godard is part of an emerging wave of young vintners spearheading a renaissance in this region by committing to more meticulous vinifications, crafting various cuvées, each designed to accentuate the individuality of their respective terroirs. These pioneers are succeeding in redirecting the attention and palates of connoisseurs worldwide towards this enclave, and appellations such as Côte du Py, Corcelette, and Grand Cras—previously virtually unknown—are beginning to resonate, gain recognition, and, most importantly, be appreciated. It is in the latter plot, the lieu dit Grand Cras, where Mee Godard produces the Domaine Mee Godard Grand Cras AOC Morgon Tinto. The distinctive blue stones of this terroir are the hallmark of Grand Cras. Here, Mee Godard meticulously cultivates one hectare of ancient, over 60-year-old gamay vines, adhering to organic and biodynamic principles, all under her personal supervision. Godard prefers to be deeply involved, hands-on in every step of the process: from fieldwork to marketing, from the winery to bottling. Twenty-four seven. A profound connection with the vineyard and the terroir.
This revolution also extends to the cellar; it involves a stylistic shift, a disruption of the status quo; it signifies a pivotal transition from the old to the new. In the case of Domaine Mee Godard Grand Cras AOC Morgon Tinto, this change is characterized by whole-cluster fermentations, extended macerations (around 18 days), and prolonged barrel aging (for about a year), followed by several months in alternative vessels (such as concrete).
“I aim to create vins de garde. They are not straightforward when young [reds]. You need to decant or be patient. I appreciate the tannins,” asserts Mee Godard. Fear not, Mee, we are confident that with wines like Domaine Mee Godard Grand Cras AOC Morgon Tinto, we can adapt to the transformation.
