About Château Durfort-Vivens
In 1855, on the occasion of the Universal Exhibition in Paris, Napoleon III ordered a classification of Gironde wines. In this ranking, where there was also space for liqueur wines, red wines were divided into five major groups (known as crus) according to their quality. Within the second of these is Château Durfort-Vivens, a red wine made at the winery of the same name in the A.O.C. Margaux, in the southwest of France.
Château Durfort-Vivens comes from the 55 hectares of vineyards that are now under the care and supervision of Gonzague Lurton. He and his wife, Claire Merlaut, are the descendants of two great families of winemakers and winegrowers. The couple, who are involved in several other projects, have been looking after Château Durfort-Vivens since 1992, trying to raise its quality back to the level expected of a Deuxième Cru. To do this, they got to work straight away, in the 1990s, when they began to cultivate the vineyards organically. However, this was not the only step, and in 2013 they decided to go further and use biodynamics. Thanks to this, Château Durfort-Vivens became the first Cru Classé of the A.O.C. Margaux to be double certified.
Château Durfort-Vivens is an elegant, intense and fragrant wine. This character comes from the quaternary gravel soils, with very little clay. Once in the winery, and after manual harvesting, only the best clusters and grapes are used, and they undergo an exhaustive selection process. After vatting, alcoholic fermentation begins, followed by maceration for a few days. Finally, once this process has finished, the different varieties and plots are tasted separately, finding the perfect blend and coupage. This step is the true litmus test, where the character of each vintage is determined.
Finally, Château Durfort-Vivens spends 18 months aging in fine grain oak barrels (60% of which are new). A French classic. If you have the opportunity to try it, don’t miss out. Take our word for it. We know what we are talking about (wink).
2023 | Château Durfort-Vivens 2023 is a red wine that stands out for its subtlety and light body. On the nose, it delivers concentrated aromas of ripe black fruits such as plums and blackberries, complemented by a very delicate spicy touch. On the palate, it presents a firm yet approachable structure, displaying a balanced maturity and a lingering finish. Perfect for those seeking a wine with character but without excessive intensity. |
