We all know the Bible story of David and Goliath. And even if we haven’t read it, we know the meaning behind it: victory for the underdog. However, if we dig deeper, we realise that David had won from the start. While the Philistine was gifted in melee, David was skilled with a sling, which is a long-range weapon. And that’s how he managed to win, using his skills to beat his opponent.

In the same way, the historic Raventós i Blanc winery has managed to conquer the wine world generation after generation. With an obsession for respecting the balance of the estate as much as possible and highlighting the small Conca del riu Anoia denomination, this winery has gained international recognition with still and sparkling wines with a high mineral expression. And they have delivered again with their recovery of Can Sumoi, an estate with forests and vineyards in the Serra de Montmell, in the Baix Penedès (Catalonia). This is where they make natural wines that are free from anything artificial, but steeped in tradition.

These wines are made from the Can Sumoi vineyard, which is planted with Sumoll, a variety that is at risk of extinction in Penedès and is known as the “Mediterranean Pinot Noir.”  The Can Sumoi Sumoll-Garnatxa wine is made with this variety accompanied by another native variety, the Garnacha. The grapes come from vines lying at an altitude of 600 metres above sea level. These vines are cultivated according to biodynamic principles and the grapes are fermented in the winery with minimal intervention in stainless steel tanks. The wine remains in stainless steel tanks for 12 months and finally it is bottled without stabilisation or filtering and without adding any oenological products.

This work results in Can Sumoi Sumoll-Garnatxa, a natural high altitude red wine from the DO Penedès, with a great Mediterranean character and made through minimal intervention.

Can Sumoi is a project of Pepe Raventós and Francesc Escala’s. An little old farm recovered from 20 hectares of vineyard among 380 hectares of forest is the ideal setting for the origin of this family of natural wines. Biodynamic agriculture and a minimal intervention in the agricultural and vinification processes give rise to wines that reflect their origin, recovering traditions and without any type of oenological additive. Natural wines, naked wines, wines that convey sincerity.
Today, the D.O Penedès is experimenting with viticulture and winemaking like no other region in Spain, home to a vast range of different grape varieties. The region is home to traditional white and red varieties, foreign ones, noble ones, permitted grapes, experimental grapes, and those that demostrate intrinsic qualities. As well as the grapes, the production techniques used are also worth noting, the location of the vineyards, the yields per hectare, the wines produced using traditional, original or even exclusive blends, the different ageing times, as well as the complexity of the different barrels used! But the reality is, given the vast diversity, it can be difficult to pinpoint what really defines a wine from Penedès, since there are so many types of wines and wineries in the region. However, the common denominator of all the wines from Penedès continues to be balance and quality.
