About Bestué Chardonnay
For years now, the wine world has been eagerly witnessing a battle. Two white grape varieties of exceptional quality. Two varieties with tremendous potential. Two nearly neighboring varieties are waging an epic struggle for the top spot as the most planted grape in the world. Chardonnay or Airén. Therein lies the quandary. At present, the contest is quite fierce, and the quintessential French variety (characteristic of Chablis) is hot on the heels of Spain's most widely planted grape. However, take heed! This does not imply that the Iberian Peninsula lacks intriguing Chardonnays; quite the opposite. There are regions, such as the D.O. Somontano, renowned for their single-varietal wines. One such example is Bestué Chardonnay.
Right on Mount Enate, in Aragón, lie the nine hectares where Bestué Chardonnay is cultivated. The winery, owned by the Bestué family and operational since the 17th century, is situated on loamy soils with excellent drainage capacity, where vine-growing is more a law than a mere activity. Despite the recent establishment of the denomination (in 1984), this area can boast of being the heir to a tradition dating back to Roman times. Always with a very small vineyard area, and limited to domestic consumption, the D.O. Somontano was never widely known, until the advent of phylloxera, when French viticulturists sought among its vines the fruits that were missing in their own country. Most of the Chardonnay vineyards date from this period, indelibly linking this variety to the region.
The harvest is carried out by hand, at night, to avoid the daytime heat. This decision is beneficial for both the laborers (who avoid heatstroke) and the grape clusters, which arrive at the winery in better condition. From there, they go straight to the destemmer – where the stems and stalks are removed – and then into the press. Here, Bestué Chardonnay will spend about six hours macerating and extracting the juice to start fermentation as soon as possible. The yeast will begin its work once Bestué Chardonnay has been transferred to stainless steel tanks (where it will also spend a month in contact with its lees).
And you? Which side are you on? Chardonnay or Airén team? Resolve your doubts with Bestué Chardonnay.
