Carignan in French, Carignano in Italian, Carignane in English and Cariñena in Spanish, this famous red variety is called Mazuela in central Spain. This hot and dry climate grape variety has high tannins, acidity and colouration. However, despite its great popularity, it is not very common to find this grape as a single variety in the D.O.Ca. Rioja, because of its untamed character. It is usually seen as a complement to the Tempranillo variety and is used to make long-aging wines.
Beronia, the winery founded in 1973 in the heart of the Rioja Alta, shows us that a grape variety in the right hands can give great results. An example of this is Beronia Mazuelo Reserva. This wine stands out from the usual ones and is made exclusively with the Mazuela variety. It is slowly fermented at a controlled temperature with periodic pumping over followed by 26 months of aging in French and American oak barrels.
Beronia Mazuelo Reserva is the only 100% Mazuelo Reserva on the market. A Rioja wine with a marked varietal personality that goes a long way.
