About Altos Las Hormigas Terroir Valle de Uco
In the province of Mendoza, in the central west of Argentina, at the foot of Mount Aconcagua (the highest peak of the Andes Mountains), there has always been a popular belief that the height of the vineyards directly influences the quality of the wine: the higher they are planted, the better.
This conviction was shared by winemaker Alberto Antonini and businessman Antonio Morescalchi, who decided to base their work in this area. Right there, near the Tunuyán River, they founded Altos Las Hormigas.
That happened in 1995. Since then, this winery has not only produced wonderful wines, but has also continued its commitment to research, working to classify and recognise the region’s characteristic soil type through the Terroir Project. “If the terroir is the music, people are the interpreter: a winegrower must deeply understand the terroir and what makes it unique, so that all the beauty hidden in the vineyard shines through in the wine made there.” This work focusses on identifying the interaction between climate, soil and vineyard and they are joined in this project by Attilio Pagli, Pedro Parra and Leonardo Erazo (Master of Viticulture in Stellenbosch).
In total they have been working for more than 20 years and the practical part of these studies is reflected in wines like Altos Las Hormigas Terroir Valle de Uco. This single-variety Malbec red wine is made from grapes grown on alluvial, gravelly soil in high density vineyards in La Consulta and Tupungato. These grapes are vinified separately after a double selection. The must ferments In stainless steel tanks with native yeasts. This process is very carefully monitored and the must is tasted three times a day. Once it becomes wine, Altos Las Hormigas Terroir Valle de Uco is aged for a minimum of 19 months in cement tanks and untoasted oak foudres. Altos Las Hormigas Terroir Valle de Uco finishes developing in the bottle, where it spends another six months before being released for sale.
