Abadia de Poblet Tinto is a red wine from D.O. Conca de Barberà, produced by the winery Abadia de Poblet in Monasterio de Poblet, Tarragona.
Abadia de Poblet is the only winery of Catalonia located within a historical monument. It gathers the winemaking tradition of the monks of the Cistercian Order, from Burgundy, and the knowledge of Conca de Barberà, a unique area that has managed to maintain the cultivation of indigenous varieties.
The philosophy of the new monastery wines, which recover local varieties (mainly Trepat, Garrut and Grenache) is that they transmit the characteristics of the grapes that they use to make the wine and the terroir in which they have been cultivated. This is achieved by working non-invasively and recovering winemaking techniques from the monks of the Cistercian Order.
Abadia de Poblet Tinto is a wine made from Trepat, Garrut (name given to the Monastrell in this area), Grenache and Tempranillo. Each variety comes from a different vineyard planted at a different height, from 500 metres to 700 metres, on soils that are poor in organic matter, with slate, sand and clay. The vines are also different ages, ranging from 20 years for the Garrut to 70 years for the Trepat.
The harvest is performed by hand with selection of grapes. Once the harvest arrives at the winery, it ferments in cement deposits. The ageing takes place in 4,000-litre foudres and cement tanks for one year.
Abadia de Poblet Tinto is an expressive, fresh wine with personality. The respectful ageing process allows to highlight the features of the grape and the terroir to the maximum extent.
