More about Finca Antigua
Finca Antigua belongs to group of the Martínez Bujada family, which is currently comprised of five wineries: Finca Valpiedra (D.O.Ca. Rioja), Finca Antigua (D.O. La Mancha), Finca Montepedroso (D.O. Rueda), Viña Bujanda (D.O.Ca. Rioja) and Cosecheros y Criadores (Vinos de la tierra de Castilla). All of them have a common denominator: the elaboration of wines from their own vineyards, but with the diversity and richness of very different cultivation areas.
The history of this family saga is intimately linked to Joaquín Martínez Bujanda, when in 1889 he founded the original winery in Oyón (Álava). In 1981, his grandson, Jesús Martínez Bujanda, significantly pushed the winery forward, extending the size of its vineyards and laying the foundations that have allowed its current development. However, the first family expansion began in 1951with Cosecheros y Criadores, a winery designed from the beginning for the export of wines. Today, this winery sells 60% of the production abroad under the classification Vinos de la Tierra de Castilla. In the 90s of the last century, brothers Carlos and Pilar, full of experience after many years of working with their father, decided to undertake a new project based on the philosophy of producing ‘vinos de finca’. To do so, in 1997 they started the construction of a new winery, Finca Valpiedra, a winery integrated in an exceptional landscape on one of the great meanders of the Ebro river, on the border between the towns of Fuenmayor and Cenicero.
Just a few years later, Carlos and Pilar fell in love with a spectacular and unique vineyard in one of the most extreme areas for cultivation. Since 2003, this vineyard has been part of the Finca Antigua family group. In 2009, the family decided to bottle all the production of the rest of their vineyards in Rioja and they launched Viña Bujanda. Familia Martínez Bujanda, until then focused on the production of red wines, purchased 25 hectares of vineyards in 2008 and built Finca Montepedroso (opened in 2012). They then started the development of white wines with the personality of a unique terroir in the heart of D.O. Rueda.
History of the winery
Finca Antigua is located in the municipality of Los Hinojosos, in the southwestern side of Cuenca (97 kilometres) and a few kilometres from the province of Toledo (138 kilometres from the capital). Familia Martínez Bujanda bought Finca Antigua at the beginning of 1999, and they opened the newly built winery in 2003. Finca Antigua, whose name refers to the many old vines, is an extension of 1,000 hectares, of which 421 are vineyards, with an altitude above 900 metres. The architectural project was carried out by LKS Estudio, who designed it based on a system of harvesting and processing by gravity (energy efficiency), and with a full integration of the final product in the wonderful natural surroundings. Today, Finca Antigua is a magnificent example of adaptation to the landscape. It is a winery that is very functional and respectful with the environment. The water reservoir determined the location of the winery and the shape of the contemporary and efficient building, witness of the harmonious coexistence between nature, culture and architecture.
The production warehouse, which takes advantage of the topography of the land, with designs at different heights for the treatment of the grape by gravity in all its processes, was conceived as a great laboratory where cleanliness stands out. Inside we can find the latest technological innovations, but always respecting the traditional care in the production of wine. Steel, stone obtained from the farm itself, and cement, are the materials used to design a spectacular building consisting of three large structures.
On the other hand, the reconversion of the farm involved an arduous technical work of classification and identification of plots. It concluded with the planting of new varieties with great potential for adaptation to the terroir and the preservation of those capable of recovering from the scars of erosion. Currently, the vineyard is distributed in 40 different plots, in which the different grapes of its wide varietal catalogue are cultivated and harvested separately. Varieties include the national Viura, Grenache, Tempranillo and Muscat and the international Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Syrah. In general, the soils of Finca Antigua, are loamy and calcareous, but also poor in organic matter. This rusticity of the soils, suitable only for crops as sturdy as the vine, and the extraordinary temperature variation between winter and summer, and between day and night, offer a characteristic acidity and a low natural pH in the grapes. This allows them to achieve a full phenolic maturity without abusing the alcoholic strength.
The field work, the parcelling of the vineyard, and the cultivation of varieties in specific plots, condition all the work carried out in the winery. The production of varietal wines is done separately, so the vinification warehouse has 40 stainless steel deposits, self-emptying and fully automated, with a capacity of 50,000 kilos of grapes each. The production room also has 36 storage and stabilisation deposits of different capacities. Here, the wine goes through the malolactic fermentation and the first rackings. Filtering, clarification and, finally, the assemblages of the different varieties take place in the classification room, resulting in the crianza wines Finca Antigua and Ciclos de Finca Antigua. Likewise, the winery works with several research and development projects with micro-production, in deposits of just 200 liters, to monitor and analyse the different results with experimental varieties and different coupages.
The ageing warehouse can hold 4,500 French and American oak barrels, which are constantly renewed. These barrels are stacked using the modern and innovative system called “honeycomb”.
On the other hand, the winery is next to a water reservoir from where it gets its irrigation and water supply, making it self-sufficient. The humidity in the ageing area is key, since it is responsible for a greater or lesser evaporation of the wine in the barrels. Therefore, the external humidity needs to be kept at 75/80%. The wall that holds the irrigation reservoir, covered in limestone from the farm itself, acts as a natural water containment, providing the optimal humidity levels. This is completed with a cooling system that keeps the temperature stable between 14 and 17 degrees all year round.
