Viña Pomal Gran Reserva is a red wine from D.O La Rioja produced by Bodegas Bilbaínas. This wine is a blend of 2 grape varieties: Tempranillo (90%) with a touch of Graciano (10%).
The grapes that are used to make Pomal Gran Reserva are grown on from limestone and gravel soils. The soil fertility is low, which results in a more concentrated flavour in the grapes. The grapes are grown on low bush vines.
Viña Pomal Gran Reserva is vinified using conventional techniques. Once at the vineyard, the grapes are destemmed and pressed before undergoing a long maceration. Following this, malolactic fermentation is carried out.
Before moving the wine to barrels, various rackings takes place and it undergoes a phases of clarification.
Viña Pomal Gran Reserva is then aged for 3 years in american oak barrels. During the first 24 months, 2 or 3 rackings take place to clean the wine naturally.
Finally, Viña Pomal Gran Reserva is aged for 3 more years in the bottle before it is able to be enjoyed.
Viña Pomal, which was founded in 1911, is the main brand of Bodegas Bilbaínas, the oldest bottling company in La Rioja. It is without a doubt one of the most prestigious wineries of the denomination of origen.
The century-old Bodegas Bilbaínas were born with a French heart and were established with a Riojan spirit. Bodegas Bilbaínas is the oldest bottling firm in La Rioja. It is the winery with the largest surface area of underground caves ("calados") in the whole region (3,400 m2). It also has the most extensive area of vineyards in the municipality of Haro. Since the beginning, the winery has been defined by its deep knowledge of the territory and the care in the production of its single-vineyard wines. These are extremely identified with the plots where they came from, hence their names: in 1911 Viña Pomal was created; in 1921, Viña Zaco; in 1923, the white wine Viña Paceta; and the range was extended in 1994 with La Vicalanda reserva, a distinguished and expressive wine that was born from the 9-hectare farm, selected in the vineyard area of Viña Pomal.
