About Vermouth Rojo La Copa

Over the last decade, vermouth or aperitif o’clock has come back and is now more fashionable than ever. This trend was very common in the 1960s, when middle-class families would have an aperitif on Sunday mornings. However, in terms of schedules, this tradition, which in Spain usually happens at midday, happens at the opposite end of the day in Europe, where vermouth is typically enjoyed just before dinner.

There are several theories on the subject, although the most realistic seems to be that this was also the case in Spain, but during to the post-war period, when most Spaniards needed two jobs to make ends meet, meal times changed, and dinners became much lighter and quicker.

Whatever the theory, vermouth is back to stay, and the old productions are back in centre stage, like Vermouth Rojo La Copa. This macerated drink, which is made with 8 botanicals (wormwood, savory, clove, orange, nutmeg, cinnamon, angelica and cinchona) is made in southern Andalusia, in the southernmost part of Spain, by the González-Byass winery (in Jerez de la Frontera, Cadiz). This winery, founded at the beginning of the 19th century by Manuel María González, make this macerated drink following the recipe that has been kept in their archives since 1896.

The base of Vermouth Rojo La Copa comes from oloroso and Pedro Ximénez soleras that are over eight years old and kept in this ancient cellar. This is a sip of history as much as it is a sip of wine. Part of this is the label, which is similar to the original design it was sold with. Likewise, the name ‘La Copa’ refers to the iron they used to brand the cattle and horses of the Marquis of Torresoto and his son Fernando.

It doesn’t really matter when the true vermouth o’clock is. It doesn’t matter if the Spaniards are wrong and the Europeans are right (or vice versa). With vermouths like Vermouth Rojo La Copa, time is not important. Any time is a good time to have a nice drink.
