About Te Whare Ra Gewurztraminer SV 5182

Gewürztraminer has always been one of those varieties that resists easy domestication. It possesses character, volume, and presence. In the wrong hands, it can become overwhelming. Yet here, in this corner of Marlborough, something aligns differently. The climate sharpens it without breaking it, the soil organises it without fully taming it, and the patient work of the Flowerday family guides it towards a more tranquil, more precise, almost serene place.

Te Whare Ra is a small family-run winery in Rapaura, nestled in the heart of the Wairau Valley, within Marlborough, on New Zealand's South Island. It is an intimate project, almost domestic in scale, born from the collaborative efforts of Jason Flowerday, a third-generation viticulturist in the country, and Anna Flowerday, a winemaker with familial viticultural roots in Australia. Two distinct paths that converge at the point of crafting wine without artifice, allowing the vineyard to always have the final say.

The vineyard, planted in 1979, is among the oldest in the area. And it shows. It is not a young vineyard still searching for its identity, but one that already knows who it is. Established vines, with years of history behind them, growing in harmony with an environment that is not always easy.

The soil is alluvial, composed of gravels, sands, and silts deposited over time from ancient channels of the Wairau Valley. The climate, on the other hand, is cool maritime, with a constant influence from the Pacific that permeates everything. Bright days, cool nights, and that thermal amplitude that allows the grape to ripen without losing freshness, maintaining the natural tension that is later felt in the wine.

The harvest is conducted at the precise moment of ripeness. In the case of Gewürztraminer SV 5182, the selection is especially meticulous, seeking that point where the aromatic intensity is perfectly balanced without tipping into exaggeration.

Subsequently, the grapes are destemmed, separating the stalks from the berries to work exclusively with the fruit. The alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, where the yeasts transform the sugars slowly and precisely, maximising the varietal expression. Finally, the wine is stabilised and bottled, preserving that sense of purity and tension that defines the ensemble.

Te Whare Ra Gewurztraminer SV 5182 emerges from a vineyard that already holds memory, a climate that demands respect, and a family that has learned that the true protagonism always belongs to the vineyard. And when you taste it, all of that becomes clear without the need for extensive explanation.
