About Te Mata Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc
Te Mata Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc is a barrel-fermented white wine made with the Sauvignon Blanc variety by Te Mata Estate in the Hawke Valley (New Zealand).
Te Mata Estate is one of the three oldest wineries in New Zealand. A project that dates back to 1854 when English immigrants, the Chambers family, discovered the vine growing potential of the incredible Hawke Valley region and began to plant vineyards. The winery now owns about 150 hectares of vineyards, of which only 30% is used to make its premium wines. The rest of the grapes are sold.
Te Mata Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc is made from Te Mata Estate’s own vineyards. These are their own lands with well drained soils that they manage using sustainable viticulture, using natural fertilisers from sheep to avoid using traditional fertilisers and planting specific predatory plants to avoid having to use chemical treatments. This results in a concentrated and very expressive grape, which is harvested manually at the optimum point of ripeness.
The grapes, harvested by plot, are destemmed and gently crushed. They are then cooled and left in contact with the skins. After a short time, they are pressed and the Te Mata Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc must is transferred to new and used French oak barrels for fermentation. Finally, the wine ages with lees and with regular pump overs for eight months, the different wines are mixed and it undergoes an additional maturation process with fine lees before clarifying and bottling.
With a label that symbolises the place where the largest colony of the Alcatraz bird is found, in the south of the Hawke Valley, Te Mata Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc is an example of a Sauvignon from the other side of the world. An intense but refreshing white wine.

2018 | Te Mata Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc 2018 is an aromatic white wine with aromas of tropical and citrus fruits, toasted notes and hints of pastries. On the palate it is refreshing, lush and complex. The mid-palate reveals flavours of ripe fruit and well integrated wood, and the finish is elegant, long and persistent. |
