About Tagaro Mancinello Nero di Troia

The name nero di Troia carries a history that intertwines myth and territory. Some associate it with the city of Troia, in northern Apulia, and the ancient winemaking tradition of the area. Others trace the legend even further back to Diomedes, the Greek hero of the Trojan War, who, according to tradition, brought cuttings from Asia Minor after being shipwrecked on these southern Italian coasts. Whether history or foundational tale, the name has undoubtedly become linked to this corner of the Mediterranean.

Over time, this grape has become one of the most emblematic varieties of Puglia. It is from this deeply rooted identity that this Mancinello Nero di Troia from Masseria Tagaro emerges. A family project located in Puglia, in southern Italy, with a history marked by the work of several generations. Their approach is based on highlighting the indigenous varieties of the region, with special attention to nero di Troia.

The vineyard is set in a Mediterranean environment, where the vines coexist with olive trees and traditional crops. The climate is warm and dry in summer, tempered by the influence of the Adriatic Sea, which brings freshness during the crucial hours of the ripening cycle. The soils are clay-limestone in nature, with good drainage capacity and mineral richness. This combination forces the vine to work deeply and favours wines with structure, balance, and clear varietal expression.

The harvest is done by hand, at the precise moment when the grape has reached its point of equilibrium. In the winery, the bunches are carefully reviewed and selected before destemming, separating the stalk, the woodier part of the cluster, to retain only the clean fruit.

Alcoholic fermentation begins in stainless steel tanks, where the must ferments in contact with the skins of the grape. It is here that the wine starts to take shape, gaining colour, structure, and the character that defines nero di Troia. Then comes malolactic fermentation, a natural process in which the sharper acidity transforms into softer, rounder sensations, refining the ensemble without losing tension. The wine is then kept in stainless steel tanks or neutral materials, without a marked passage through wood, with the clear intention of not masking anything and allowing the fruit to speak as it is. Finally, it is bottled after stabilisation, ready to showcase its most direct profile.

Tagaro Mancinello Nero di Troia is a wine that requires no reinterpretation. An honest nero di Troia, it speaks of southern Italy with calm, light, and that simple way of things done well.
