About Siflogo Vardea
Wine production has been a cultural and agricultural activity that has been passed down from generation to generation. In fact, it is a way of spreading and preserving culture, especially when it comes to regions with deep-rooted winemaking traditions. Dionysis Papanikolopoulos, a teacher and poet with a deep knowledge and sensitivity for his local heritage, culture and history, decided to produce wines in 1994 with his wife Maria in a small mountain village on the island of Lefkada, in the Ionian Sea (Greece) with the aim of preserving the rich wine heritage. In their small winery-workshop Siflogo produce natural and organic wines, recovering native varieties that are in danger of extinction, promoting local practices and maintaining deep-rooted winemaking traditions.
Among the varieties brought back from the edge of extinction, Vardea is the island’s most important white variety and the one that the Papanikolopoulos family uses to make Siflogo Vardea. This is a single-variety orange wine whose vines, lying at an altitude of 500 m above sea level, on dry, poor, rocky limestone soils, have never been treated with chemical products. Instead, they are grown using organic practices with an emphasis on low yields with the aim of producing the purest expression of the terroir. All the work is manual and the harvest takes place when the grapes reach optimum ripeness. In the winery, the grapes spend 4 days in contact with the skins and ferment with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks for 35 days. Finally, the wine ages for 5 months in these same tanks and is bottled without filtering or clarifying.
Thanks to this love for the land and tradition, and a zero-zero vinification, Siflogo Vardea showcases all the purity of an almost forgotten variety. A historical legacy that the
Papanikolopoulos family has looked after and is now guarded by their son Vassilis.
2021 | Siflogo Vardea 2021 is a complex orange wine with intense aromas of yellow fruit accompanied by herbaceous notes and mineral hints. On the palate it is fresh, saline and unctuous. A wine with noticeable acidity, grainy texture and a penetrating bitter finish. |
