About Sadie Family Soldaat
As he himself proclaims, "A viticultor should craft wines within their native region. That is where they can most intimately understand the terroir..."; hence, after several years of honing his craft in El Priorat, Eben Sadie returned to Swartland in South Africa, the land of his birth, where he has an exhaustive knowledge of every soil type and plot across his 24 hectares. Here, perched at a certain elevation (bathed in light and cooled by the breeze), he discovered the quintessential spot for cultivating Grenache, a varietal he became acquainted with during his tenure in the El Priorat region of Catalonia (northwest Spain). Since then, joy and success have reigned in his winery with creations like Sadie Family Soldaat.
Globally, Grenache is among the most widely planted varietals; yet, none will astonish you quite like this one. Typically, this red grape can yield wines of considerable alcoholic strength, but Sadie Family alters this narrative by cultivating at high elevations, specifically around 708 meters above sea level. Sadie Family Soldaat originates from six hectares of venerable vineyard (over 42 years old) situated in the Piekenierskloof pass. This locale lends its name to the wine, as piekeniers refers to the infantry soldiers stationed atop the mountain to safeguard the livestock from theft, thus inspiring the name Soldaat (soldier). Additionally, it is worth noting that Eben Sadie is a staunch advocate for Grenache, as he believes it to be the grape varietal best suited to adapt to South Africa's increasingly arid climate.
Sadie Family Soldaat is harvested and promptly transported to the winery, where a portion is vinified with the whole cluster. The remainder is directed to the destemmer, where the stems are removed and the grapes are lightly crushed to release some juice. Once everything is ensconced in the vat, Sadie Family Soldaat begins its fermentation in concrete tanks, a process that will take about 30 days to complete. Throughout this period, Sadie Family Soldaat remains in contact with the skins until the pressing time arrives, at which point the solids will be separated from the liquid.
Subsequently, Sadie Family Soldaat is transferred back to concrete, where it will mature on its lees for approximately 8 months. After this maturation, Sadie Family Soldaat is racked once again to another concrete vessel, where it will spend an additional four months until it is perfectly clarified.
Finally, just before bottling, a small amount of sulphite is added to Sadie Family Soldaat and... Voilà! One of South Africa's most renowned and intriguing red wines is unveiled to the world.
2022 |
Sadie Family Soldaat 2022 beckons you to explore its distinctive character with each sip. On the nose, it unfurls scents of ripe cherries and raspberries, interwoven with delicate mineral nuances reminiscent of damp stones. On the palate, its structure is dense, delivering a velvety texture that culminates in a lingering finish. This red wine exhibits an exquisite red fruit profile and a sophisticated balance that effortlessly captivates.
