About Raventós d'Alella Pansa Blanca

In 1981, they embarked on a mission: to extract the very best from the pansa blanca grape. Two decades later, Raventós d'Alella can be justifiably proud of their achievement (and then some). The evidence: the single-varietal Raventós d'Alella Pansa Blanca

Beneath an unassuming name, devoid of any pretension, lies one of the most intriguing white wines you can find in Catalonia. Just north of Barcelona, about 20 km from the city, lies one of the most significant strongholds of pansa blanca in the D.O. Alella. This designation, one of the oldest in Spain, fiercely defends itself against the encroaching urbanisation that threatens to obliterate most of its old vineyards, over 25 years old, which imbue their wines with soul and a unique character. In fact, these vines thrive on sandy-textured soils, known as sauló, which are very poor in nutrients and retain little water. However, what truly defines the profile of Raventós d'Alella Pansa Blanca is the Mediterranean Sea, which imparts salinity and distinctive characteristics.

In the production of Raventós d'Alella Pansa Blanca, the manual harvesting, whole-cluster fermentation, and cold maceration with the skins (which allows for greater aroma extraction) are also crucial. Raventós d'Alella Pansa Blanca is transferred to new Allier oak barrels, where it undergoes a very slow fermentation, always at a controlled temperature of 16°C, followed by ageing on its lees. More Mediterranean, it could not be!
