About Pelissero Barbera d'Alba Piani

They have the land in their blood. The Langhe region, in the Italian Piedmont, is embodied in their DNA. That’s what they think. And with good reason. Perhaps it’s because of the number of years that the Pelissero family has been working the vineyards that spread over the hills of this northern Italian area, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In total there are 42 hectares, sustainably cultivated, and divided into several vineyards growing mainly red varieties that are typical of Piedmont, like Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera. The latter, specifically, is used to make Pelissero Barbera d'Alba Piani, a red wine from the D.O.C. Barbera d'Alba, which starts life in the Cerro de Piani, a sub-region of Ferrere (in the municipality of Treiso), which is where the wine gets its name from. But this area, which is relatively flat and lies between the Langhe hills, doesn’t just lend the wine its name. The Piani vineyard also gives the wine a tannicity that the Barbera grape (very rich in anthocyanins that add colour) does not usually have. These tannins come directly from the small amount of clay in this vineyard’s soil. The loams, which are very similar to bentonite, give both sponginess to the soil and tannins that are passed on to the old vines (planted in 1965 and replanted in 2005) and to the grapes (facing west). This detail is worth noting, because the main aim of the vinification process at Pelissero is to showcase the characteristics of each grape as much as possible. In the winery, the Pelissero Barbera d'Alba Piani production process begins with a pre-fermentation maceration of 15-20 days. From there Pelissero Barbera d'Alba Piani is transferred to stainless steel tanks, where it undergoes fermentation at a controlled temperature. The aging happens in oak barrels (40% new and the rest of 50 hL), where it spends 8 to 9 months refining. After being blended, Pelissero Barbera d'Alba Piani is bottled and left to settle for another two months in these bottles before being released. The result: a complex, flavoursome and succulent red with nothing to envy in a Nebbiolo.
2019 Pelissero Barbera d'Alba Piani 2019 is a juicy red. The nose is fine and elegant, with fruity notes (blackberry, plums) and hints of wood. The palate is savoury and smooth, with very polished tannins. Well balanced. Pleasant acidity. Persistent finish.

Pelissero Barbera d'Alba Piani 2018 is a succulent red wine. Olfactorily, it is refined, exuding scents of thyme, sage, plum, and blackberry. On the palate, it is well-constructed, endowed with velvety tannins. It boasts a harmonious balance between salinity and acidity. The finish is extensive, imbued with spices and enduring presence.
