About Mas d'en Compte
Gabriel García Márquez, in his work "One Hundred Years of Solitude," illustrates how blindly embracing the modern and the foreign can lead to the loss of our cultural identity and authenticity. This reflection is particularly pertinent today, when it is often assumed that the foreign and the new are always superior, without even questioning it.
Fortunately, we are experiencing a kind of return to our roots. After so long believing that the modern was all that mattered, we now realise that our essence and authenticity have much to offer. It is thrilling to witness a new generation of young people with energy and firm conviction determined to follow that path, seeking in wine a future prospect.
A clear example of this reclamation of authenticity can be found at Celler Cal Pla in Porrera, in the heart of the Priorat. Founded in 1814, this family winery has passed down the legacy of vine cultivation and exceptional wine production through the generations. Today, Joan Sangenís, the seventh generation of the family, continues to lead Celler with a passion that honours tradition while keeping an eye on the future.
One of its most representative wines is Mas d'en Compte Negre, a red from D.O.Q. Priorat that masterfully reflects the essence of the terroir. Originating from vineyards of cabernet, garnacha, and cariñena, some of which are over 60 years old, this wine is a tribute to the land of licorella, the characteristic soil of the region. The altitude, scarce rainfall, and contrasting temperatures contribute to a power, minerality, and elegance that make it unique in the world.
With traditional vinification and 14 months of ageing in French oak barrels and foudres, Mas d'en Compte is a concentrated, full-bodied red wine that speaks with its own voice. A true demonstration in a bottle that authenticity cannot be forgotten.

On the nose, it exudes enchanting scents of ripe cherries and fresh raspberries, interwoven with hints of spices and licorice, accompanied by a subtle mineral undertone. 2015 | Mas d'en Compte Negre 2015 is a concentrated red wine with a complex nose of red and black fruit, notes of compote and balsamic, spiced and mineral hints. On the palate it’s fleshy, powerful and very expressive. An elegant wine with silky tannins and a long, persistent finish. Great aging potential. |
|
2011 | On the palate, this Spanish wine shows a powerful, bulky attack and an embracing mid palate marked by the fleshy notes of expressive fruit, a very well integrated acidity which freshens and defines the wine and an intense tannic sensation. Long, tasty and persistent finish which leaves nice toasted notes at retro-olfaction. Round, elegant and defined. Dark cherry colour with ruby red rim. Clean and bright. Strong, slightly tinted tears stain the glass. Complex and concentrated nasal aromas. Such as in the case of the previous vintage, notes of red and black fruits prevail. However, in this wine they are fresher, at their optimum ripeness, juicer and more expressive. The toasted notes, milky hints, spiced and balsamic aromas and mineral background which are very typical of Priorat, form an intense and pleasant set. |

2010 | In the palate, this Spanish wine shows a powerful, bulky attack and an embracing mid palate marked by the fleshy notes of expressive fruit, a very well integrated acidity which freshens and defines it and an intense tannic sensation. Long, tasty and persistent finish which leaves nice toasted notes at retro-olfaction. It is round, elegant and defined. Dark cherry colour with ruby red edges. Clean and bright wine with thick coloured tears. Complex and concentrated nasal aromas. Such as in the case of the previous vintage, the notes of red and black fruits are dominant. However, in this wine it is fresher, at its optimal ripeness, juicer and more expressive. Its toasted notes, its milky hints, its spiced and balsamic aromas and its mineral background very typical of Priorat, form an intense and pleasant set. |

|
2008 | It is intense and well-bodied at the attack. It has a long, sweet, powerful but gentle and kind mid palate. Its well-balanced notes of fruit and wood are noticed along with some balsamic hints which become more noticeable than in the nose. It has a good acidity which provides the wine with a nice freshness. Its tannins still need some time to round out. Very long and very persistent finish with good aromas of mellow fruit and good toasted notes.
A great, elegant and complex wine from Priorat. Very pleasant. Intense black cherry colour with thin ruby red edges. High robe. Clean and bright wine with dense tears. Intense and elegant aromatic complexity. Initially, the ripe black fruit is timidly released and quickly gains in expressiveness. After swirling the glass, some vegetables and quite sweet spicy notes are noticed along with some aromas of tobacco and an outstanding minerality. After some more time, more complex aromas appear reminiscent of coffee, chocolate and toffee and of an intense, noble and elegant toasted aroma. |
